how to reduce chances of pre ECLAMPSIA in second pregnancy?
I had pre Eclampsia in my first pregnancy and now just found out that im pregnant again. I will be going to the doctor for check up etc but was wandering if anyone had pre Eclampsia in their first but not second pregnancy. Also anyone know how to reduce your chances?
Answer: If you developed pre-Eclampsia rather late (34+ weeks) then you're actually in fairly good shape to dodge the bullet this time around. First-time mothers are more likely to get PE than those on their second pregnancy and although you are at greater risk than someone who's never had PE before, you're already at a lower risk.
Making sure you don't put on too much weight during pregnancy will help slightly. If you were obese managing to get yourself down to a healthy weight before you got pregnant can make a big difference but since you're already pregnant you can't lose weight - just make sure you don't put on too much.
I asked my doctor before getting pregnant - he said the only thing I could do to reduce my risk was what I'd already done - and that was lose the extra nearly 100lbs I was carrying around.
Your doctor may keep a closer eye on you throughout your pregnancy, and mine said he might too, but my blood pressure has been excellent. With my first pregnancy it was creeping up around 28 weeks or so we started going every 2 weeks earlier than normal, but with fine blood pressure and no swelling I'm at 32 weeks and just now starting to go every 2 weeks.
Good luck!

Pre ECLAMPSIA- whens the earliest it can be detected/ when are the earliest symptoms start to show?
Am 32 weeks 1st pregnancy, just curious to what others have been through/if you have suffered.
Have protein in urine but no swelling in hands/feet and all else is fine
What are happens if detected? what has to be done?
Answer: Hello. Try not to get too worried.
I had pre-Eclampsia in my first pregnancy. It came on at around 28 weeks and the symptoms I had were protein in my urine and high blood pressure. I felt fine and couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. I had my urine and blood pressure tested every other day and unfortunatly the blood pressure got worse really quickly. I was admitted to hospital at 29 weeks on bedrest and my baby was delivered by c-section at thirty weeks. She was really tiny but she did really well and she's 7 now and completly fine.
I've had two babies since and the pre-Eclampsia didn't come back.
Make sure you get regular check ups and tell your midwife/doc if anything changes. As long as it's just the protein and not high blood pressure too you should be fine but even if you do develop full pre-Eclampsia then you are already at 32 weeks which means your baby will be well on the way to being ready to be born anyway.
Hope I haven't scared you. You'll be fine it's really common and the professionals know what they're dealing with.

How long should we wait before ttc 3rd after pre ECLAMPSIA and 2nd c section?
I have just recently had my 2nd child (8 weeks ago) and suffered with pre Eclampsia again, the same as with my first. So both children were delivered by c section. I was diagnosed with PCOS while ttc my 2nd and so it took clomid and a year and a half to conceive him. With all this in mind, i was just wondering how long before we can start ttc again.
Answer: You REALLY need to wait a year before ttc. My friend had GD and it took them over a year to conceive, yet 3 months into the deal BAM!! And she has been scared her whole pregnancy because of it. Just wait hun. It is NOT worth the risk, plus I'm sure your children would love some one on one time with their mommy. :)

how likely is it to have a full term baby while having pre ECLAMPSIA?
any if anyone has any storys about pre Eclampsia please feel free to share.
Answer: I had pre Eclampsia, so did my sister with 2 of her 3, and had all full term babies, none before 38 weeks. I think that you if you have it should be careful to lower your bp if you can, drink teas, take baths, it will calm you down, and take walks. Put your feet up. Eat protein and healthy foods. Lots of fruits and veggies. This makes the symptoms lessen, and milk and dairy is very good too if you have it. I am not sure what it does, but it does work. Are you on a good prenatal?
I have this pregnancy, been off yeast, corn and corn dirrivatives (ie. cornstarch and corn syrup ect.), and lessened my intake of sugar and wheat, and have been AWESOME healthy!! Good luck, Sweety. Preeclamsia sucks.

What causes pre-ECLAMPSIA, and how can it be cured?
Is there a way of predicting the likelihood of pre-Eclampsia, and any way to avoid it before onset?
Answer: Pre-eclampsic hypertension is a predictable and natural haemodynamic mechanism arising out of a defectively low heart rate in response to the demand for raised cardiac output.
Unduly high pulse pressure caused by the heart rate being too low is the primary cause of the high systolic pressures characterizing the onset of pre-Eclampsia . This excessively high pulse pressure combined with (, i.e. superimposed upon) an already elevated diastolic pressure, (the natural consequence of the physical stress associated with the advancing stages of early pregnancy), results in abnormally high systolic pressures.
Normally, the rising demand for increasing cardiac output is met by heart rate and stroke volume rising roughly in tandem, at similar rates and to similar extents, but when for any reason the heart rate is inhibited from rising then, to ensure cardiac output remains acceptably high, the brain must compensate by making stroke volume rise by an equivalent extent.
But therefore, with a healthy heart, stroke volume (SV), being directly proportional to pulse pressure (PP) also rises by the same extent, often to excessively high and unacceptable levels, easily calculated as a function of heart rate.
Diastolic pressure, being a function of stress, is in most cases already elevated because of increased cardiac output after the first trimester, and the sum of an already elevated Pd to the artificially raised PP gives rise to the inappropriately high systolic pressures.
The obvious caveat which must be entered of course, is that for stroke volume to rise the heart must be healthy. If it's impaired to begin with, then it will not be able to deliver the necessary stroke volume at the required pressure, posing risk to both mother and foetus by reducing cardiac output, both heart rate and stroke volume being inadequate.
The distinguishing diagnostic feature is the high ratio of pulse pressure to heart rate, (PP/HR) when the onset of pre-Eclampsia is observed, although great care is necessary to ensure that this ratio has been monitored from the earliest presentation. That is to say, any non-pregnant individual’s PP/HR value at rest may differ greatly from the next person’s, and high values alone do not constitute a marker. The marker is only when the individual’s own, specific ratio rises rapidly.
Thus, a ratio of 0.6 rising to 0.9 for one patient is not of great significance, whereas another’s ratio of 0.4 rising to 0.85 certainly is, and should cause concern.
(It is helpful, both for brevity and clarity, to denote the RISE in the ratio of pulse pressure to heart rate as Pre-Eclampsic Risk Index, or P-E.R.I., a numerical parameter specific to any individual patient. If the numerical value of this index rises towards 1.5 or even 2, it should be recognized as being of concern.)
Both avoidance and alleviation of the condition is relatively trivial, and can be accomplished by raising pulse rate artificially, -preferably without the concomitant raising of cardiac output. This can be achieved by using external (demand) pace making procedures.
It is likely (but not proven) that the incidence of pre-Eclampsia is linked to interaction between foetal and maternal heart rates, involving some degree of 'capture' and synchrony of one by the other, or possibly harmonics of either. This is a common event in wave mechanics, where the phenomenon is inevitable.
However, the concept of "beating" or heterodyning cannot be ruled out, giving rise to exceptional peak-to-peak trans-membrane pressures leading to degradation of the structural integrity of the foetal sac.

How dangerous is pre-ECLAMPSIA if developed at 37 weeks?
I have had pretty severe swelling in my hands and feet for well over a month now and the doctor has been monitoring my blood pressure closely to make sure Im O.K. - Today at my 37 week check-up my blood pressure had gone up a lot so he said I should get blood work done right away to make sure everything is O.K. and that I need to come back in 2 days to check in with him and re-test my blood pressure. He said at that point we could discuss options for speeding the delivery process along if I do indeed have pre-Eclampsia....he said the fact that the baby is already considered "full term" is good and that I shouldnt worry too much. Anyone else go through something like this? Its kind of hard not to worry.
Answer: As far as the baby goes, they can quickly induce or deliver via c-section if necessary and will do just fine because you are technically full-term.
However in terms of your health, being 37 weeks has no bearing on how serious your pre-Eclampsia could be now or could potentially become. It's certainly nothing to mess around with. If your labs are off, if you're putting out a lot of protein in your urine and you're pressures are high, it can easily and quickly turn into full-blown Eclampsia, which involves seizures, some degree of liver failure, and possibly blood clotting disorders. This is rare.
The vast majority of the time severe cases of pre-Eclampsia are controlled and is prevented from progressing to Eclampsia by a magnesium sulfate IV drip and by delivering the baby. But you are still at risk for at least a week after delivery and will need to be watched closely before discharge.
Until your next visit, be mindful of symptoms of worsening pre-Eclampsia - floaty spots in your field of vision, increase in headaches and swelling, decrease in urine output despite good hydration, or a pain in the upper-right area of your stomach that feels similar to severe heartburn. Call your doctor's office or hospital at any time if these things happen or worsen.
Good luck!

Is it easy to misdiagnose ECLAMPSIA in dogs?
My dog had all the symptoms of Eclampsia and my Vet charged us $200.00 and told us she was asthmatic. I of course took her to another vet for a second opinion and they diagnosed her with Eclampsia. Do you think this was a simple mistake or should I get rid of that Vet? I would think that calcium deficiancy would of been the first thing to come to his mind considering the large litter size of my chihuahua. I guess what I really want to know is if this is a common misdiagnosis and should I give my Vet a second chance.
Answer: Well, I am not a vet, but after my first experience with one of my chihuahuas and Eclampsia, I definitrly can recognise the symptoms now. I don't see how a vet could not know that the dog had Eclampsia. I hope she is okay now and the pups as well. I would definitely change vets.

Answer: You need to see a Doctor! Not only are you risking your baby you are risking your life as well. When your blood pressure get into toxic levels you could suffer a stroke that could endanger your life and the babies life. If you are 28 weeks gestation or later your baby has a very good chance of not being very sick, but still you need to see your doctor and have this checked out. if you are ok the cost will be minimal compared to the bill you will get if you have a stroke.

Is it possible to develop pre ECLAMPSIA with your second child and not the first?
This is my second pregnancy and I asked a question a few minutes ago about rapid weight gain in a two week period and migraines and some of the answers included pre Eclampsia so I was wondering if you can develop it in your second pregnancy or if its something that you have every pregnancy because I did not have it with my first. I may not have it now, but I just wanted to do some research. Thanks guys and I wont ask anymore questions for awhile lol
Answer: Yep, sure is. Each pregnancy is different and can come with a different set of symptoms/diagnosis. Your doctor will let you know if you are at risk for developing preEclampsia (sp?). The first give away is blood pressure and protein in your urine. I'm currently seeing a specialist and being watched for it myself due to having had high blood pressure earlier in pregnancy.

I dont know what exactly Eclampsia is. When I got pregnant few years ago, I had this problem that I associated with Eclampsia, but Im not sure if it really is. I have pains in my bones, I cant walk straight and I am weak especially during the last 2 months!
Answer: The best thing to do is to monitor blood pressure and protein in the urine late in pregnancy. (Starting sometime in the third trimester.) If the blood pressure is too high or there is excess protein in the urine, you are usually sent for further testing to see if you have pre-Eclampsia. If so, usually it is necessary to deliver the baby quickly.
