Is television advertising during the OLYMPICS out of control?
I have clocked 32 minutes of adverts in a one hour session of watching. I have eight different channels covering the Olympics and at any given time more than half are in commercial mode. Has the Olympic committee become so greedy and corrupt that they must plague us so? From now on I will just go to Youtube for hilites.
Answer: Try to realize it's not exactly Olympic Committee (VANOC) that has decided to "plague you so", it is also the networks who choose to do so. Everybody makes more money with more advertisements.

What ever happened to the OLYMPICS being an amateur competition? Why is it full of pro athletes now?
I thought the Olympics was supposed to be a competition of the worlds best AMATEUR athletes. Why are there so many pro athletes in it now then? I think this takes away from the whole idea of the Olympics.
Answer: It goes back to hockey and basketball and the "Cold War". The Soviets were putting there drugged up super droids in competition and the only way to compete was to put pros in the mix.

Why during the OLYMPICS were 3 minutes added to the end of the soccer match?
Why during the Olympics were 3 minutes added to the end of the soccer match? The announcer said that an additional 3 minutes (for a total of 6) could have been arbitrarily added. No explanation was given.
Answer: Depending on the game there is time lost, ex.. when a player fouls another player time goes by as they prepare for the foul kick. this and other things like going out of bounds and corner kicks, ect.. seconds go by and near the end of a soccer game the ref decides how much time was lost during the game and adds on with the usual 2,3,4 mins. It was not explained because alot of people who watch soccer know this. but anyway hope i helped.

What year did the OLYMPICS begin to allow professional athletes to compete?
The Olympics for a long time were only for amateur athletes, and professionals were not allowed to compete. This has changed of course. What year did this change occur, allowing professionals to compete in the olympic games?
Answer: I agree with dajj's answer from an official standpoint. But the Olympics and amateurism is much murkier than the IOC would like you to believe.
I guess it depends on what your definition of professional. Since the 1960's the Soviet bloc countries drafted their best athletes into the army, paid them to train full-time, and they maintained their amateur status. In the early 1980's basketball players from European leagues were declared amateurs but not NBA players. Yet we still don't see pro boxers in the Olympics. Amateurism remains a messy matter with the Olympics, though not nearly as much of a sham as it was.

How are countries selected to compete at the OLYMPICS?
For example, countries like Canada, Russia, China, Usa, are always at the Olympics. Why isnt Vietnam, or Africa, or Iran or those countries in the Olympics?
Do they have to go through a process or long application to be accepted into the Olympics?
Why dont those countries have a National Team to compete at International/world levels?
Answer: How countries (territories, dependents and geographical areas) are selected to compete in the Olympics is by getting recognized by the International Olympic Committee. In 2004 Athens out of the 202 National Olympic Committees (NOCS) only Djibouti didn't participate. 2008 Beijing 3 new NOCs have been admitted Pacific Island nations of Tuvalu , Marshall Islands and Montenegro which declared its independence from the Serbian Republic.
Next step which I believe your driving at is the athletes themselves that is all decided from how well the athletes do in their respective countries at world championships and other Olympic qualifying events as well as regional Olympic qualifying events. This determines the number of athletes or sport teams that can compete from their country in their respective sports.
You also have quotas for spots to be won or awarded from the geographical zones (Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania). Another way athletes can be awarded a spot in the Olympics is through a wild card invitation this is a way to encourage participation from underepresented countries. Each sport governed by their own federation uses a system for Olympic Qualifying that is pretty simaler, but also has differances.
If you take a look at how gymnasts qualified for the Olympics you'll see that national teams where awarded spots on how well they did at the 2007 Gymnastic World Championships. Lastly 4 male and 4 female gymnasts where granted spots from a WC including 1 male gymnast from Vietnam.
http://www.nbcOlympics.com/gymnastics/insidethissport/qualifications/newsid=116633.html
The reason why you alway see USA, China, Russia and Canada at the Olympics is they have strong sport program and they usually qualify athletes into almost all the sports as well as teams. Where as the smaller Olympic participants have smaller athletic delegation in a limited amount of sports that may not make it far into the competition. Do not have the funding to develop strong athletic program.
I was suprised you mentioned Africa , which is a continent not a country meaning they each compete as seperate teams, as many of the countries do very well in Athletics Kenya has won 54 medals from its runners and what about Ethiopia. Not to mention Nigeria 1996 won gold medal and Cameroon 2000 in the Football tournament.
Iran has competed in every Olympics since 1988 they missed 1980-84 over political disputes and go back to 1948 when they won their 1st medal. Also Iran has a strong wrestling and weightlifting team as they won 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in Athens 2004. Taekwondo also won 2 of the medals.
Vietnam has very small atheltic delegation and has a chance to win a medal in Taekwondo which they won a bronze in 2000. Vietnam since 1980 only missed 1 Olympics that was in 1984 LA as part of the Soviet bloc boycott.

What do olympic track and field runners do when there not training for the OLYMPICS?
i know the trials are every four years
when the track runners arent running in the Olympics... do they run in any other meets?
also, how old do you have to be to try out for track events?
thanks!
Answer: Elite athletes are professionals that run in meets every year.
There are two world championships between the Olympics.
There are circuits that pay athletes each year.
Elite athletes train all year, they have different programs depending on the time of year, and they also run indoors.
There are no age limits on track and field athletes, but each country is limited to a maximum of three per event, but they may not have any in the event if their athletes do not meet the qualifying standards.

How will the OLYMPICS effect young people in Britain?
They spend tons of money, but why having the Olympics help young people? Why not spend the £2.4bn on schools and education?
Answer: Sponsoring the Olympic games, while very costly, if done right can show off your country's wealth and culture to the rest of the world and also invoke patriotism in many of the citizens of that country. Most people would agree that tightening your belts in other areas for a few years (like education) is well worth the publicity and pride that sponsoring an Olympic games will get your respective country if done right.

1/2. It all started in Greece, in the Peloponnese, some 3,000 years ago. According to historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. They were dedicated to the Olympian gods and were staged on the ancient plains of Olympia.
3. Athens 1896
4. The Olympic victor received his first awards immediately after the competition. Following the announcement of the winner's name by the herald, a Hellanodikis (Greek judge) would place a palm branch in his hands, while the spectators cheered and threw flowers to him. Red ribbons were tied on his head and hands as a mark of victory.
The official award ceremony would take place on the last day of the Games, at the elevated vestibule of the temple of Zeus. In a loud voice, the herald would announce the name of the Olympic winner, his father's name, and his homeland. Then, the Hellanodikis placed the sacred olive tree wreath, or kotinos, on the winner's head.

How are the number of Olympic athletes each country sends to the OLYMPICS determined?
Its no secret that certain countries send more athletes to the Olympics than other countries, but how is this determined? Why the USA send x number of athletes for one sport while another South Korea sends y number for the same sport? Im guessing there is a limit to the number of athletes each country sends per sport, but why dont all countries send the max just to increase their chances of winning medals?
Answer: as above, nations that have very poor or no ranking are allowed to send 1 athlete, thats why sometimes you see someone who is total rubbish but the spirit of the Olympics lets this happen.
