MOVIE REVIEW | THE DESCENDANTS; For One Man, Hawaii Is a Land of Problems
In a voice-over at the beginning of The Descendants, Matt King (George Clooney) challenges the myth, endemic among mainlanders, that Hawaii, where he lives, is a paradise on earth. His brief rant is buttressed by images of poverty and grime that are powerful but also slightly misleading, since Matts story is not -- or at least not explicitly - A O Scott reviews Alexander Payne film The Descendants, starring George Clooney. How does the author of the Novel BIRDSONG use rank to describe attitudes towards war?
Its a question in the novel Birdsong, I keep asking myself, seen as in WW1 rank was important to define your role in the war, in the end there all equal but the author keeps reminding us of there rank, Why?
Answer: because in the army, particularly in those days, everyone is not equal.
the rank and file privates do as they are told and are to some extent "cannon fodder"
the NCOs - pass on instructions to them and have power over them but are themselves still just pawns in the battle
the officers have the power and make the decisions, often of life and death (and certainly in WWI frequently without any thought for the men they command)

What are the BIRDSONG contests that take place in Brugge?
I recently visited Brugge in Belgium, and stumbled across a long line of people sitting with their birds in boxes in front of them! They were listening to their birds sing and drawing little white lines on a stick with chalk. We had no clue what they were doing! Please explain :)
Answer: The birds are finches. The winner is the finch who sings the most "suskewiet" in one hour.
All boxes are with birds are place on a line with their owner behind. Then each owner shifts one place so they are behind another bird. They sign the stick everytime they hear a correct song of the bird before them. The stick make it easy to make the totals.
There is a good wikipedia page about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinkensport

Is there any meaning to BIRDSONG as a means of communication between birds?
With so many variations, there must be, surely?
Sometimes it will seem like one sings then waits for a reply, however close or distant it is.
The thumbs down are not from me!!!
Answer: There are a number or reasons for the variations of bird songs
To proclaim their territory.
Warn off others of the same species,
To attract a mate (it is the Male that does the singing)
To announce the hatching of eggs.
Last but not least to say they are happy with their lot.

Answer: It is not about women. it is essentially a book about male bonding and latent homosexuality. the female characters are there only to provide counterpoint to the primary characters own narcissism.

Why do the beautiful blue jays have to have such an ANNOYING BIRDSONG?
Im happy to have so many types birds visit the tree by my porch but those screeching blue jays are driving me crazy.
Answer: Blue-jays while lovely are somewhat mean little birds. One day my husband came running into the house bleeding from his forehead. He had unknowingly stopped to pick up a baby blue jay in a meadow nearby. Down swooped the 'mama" blue jay and attacked him with her beak to protect her baby--lol--

Does anyone know how to reset the Singing Bird Clock so that the BIRDSONG matches the bird?
I lost my instructions, and the battery in my sons clock died. I replaced the battery, but the Birdsong is about five hours off from the bird pictured.
Answer: Try these instructions, they are from the back of my clock but the birds all died and the clock just keeps ticking away.
SETTING THE TIME: ( Remove all batteries before setting)
1. Turn the hand set knob in the rear of the battery compartment clockwise or counter clockwise to read 10 minutes before 12:00 o'clock (11:50)
2. Insert three " AA" batteries into the battery compartment
3. Now turn the handset knob clockwise to adjust the desired time.
Note: Each time the set test button"red" is pressed, this sets the birds melodies to the next hours bird. If pressed, you must follow the instructions above to reset properly or you will not hear the correct melody with the correct bird.
~~~~~~~~~`
If the wording doesn't sound correct it is not my mistake I copied it as they printed. I also noted that the word "knob" is correct in one place but spelled "knop" in another, so take it for what it is worth.
Why does Elizabeth in Sebastian Faulks novel BIRDSONG call her son after Jacks son?
I am exploring how Elizabeth has a kind of relationship with her Grandfather, Stephen through his notebooks and various other sources. I think she named her son Jack because she made a close connection with Stephen through his notebooks, however at the end of the novel when Elizabeth names her son John after Jack Firebraces son, she suggests to Robert that it is a promise to her grandfather. Does anyone have any ideas what she means by this? Why do you think Elizabeth names her son, John? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Answer: Earlier in the book, Stephen promises Jack Firebrace that he will have his children for him during the war before Jack dies... Elizabeth reads this in Stephens note book and it is her way keeping her Grandfather's promise for him, repaying him for the sacrifices he made, almost. It's particularly poignant as it is as if the story has come full circle and nothing is left undone.
