How is the date for CHINESE NEW YEAR determined?
For most of us, New Years Day is January 1st, the very start of the Gregorian calendar. In Chinese tradition, however, its different. Last year, it was February 3rd, this year its going to be January 23rd, and next year it will be February 10th.
I dont know how this works at all. Can anyone tell me how the date of Chinese new year is determined, preferably someone with knowledge of Chinese culture?
Answer: The Chinese use a lunarsolar calendar.
Knowing the exact calculation of each new year is very complex. Each month is determined by the moon's conjunction with the sun and the sun's longitude in 30 degree increments. ...more

Is a money tree a good gift for the CHINESE NEW YEAR?
I work at a CPA firm. Our biggest client is a chinese company, we would like to show them our appriciation by getting them a gift. Is a money tree a good gift? Or bonsai better? Is it a traditional gift for the Chinese new year?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Answer: Do not give them a bonsai. Bonsai needs to be carefully maintained and if your clients are busy people, who is going to maintain it for them? Bonsai are actually not indoor plants, they need sunlight and should only be brought indoors about once a week. Since the roots of a Bonsai are usually exposed or close to the surface, they need to be always kept moist. When giving a gift, especially a plant such as a Bonsai, you also need to keep in mind the maintance of the plant.
A money tree is a great options. Money trees only need to be water once a week and does not require direct sunlight. This means it can go anywhere in the office. Get a nice money tree that is braided, usually five trees entertwined together.
However, if you want to give a "traditional" gift, food is always a good option. Buy them a nice box of chocolate, cookies, or other tasty treats with some oranges or tangerines (oranges and tangerines are considered good luck) for their office staff would be much appreciated. Oh, you can also throw in some good tea too. Or better yet, give them a gift baskets of fruits or other nice treats.
Good luck and Happy New Year.

What is the difference between CHINESE NEW YEAR and japanese new year?
I am doing a school project and i need to know the difference between chinese and japanese new year
Answer: Next year, our Chinese friends will celebrate Chinese new year (Year of the Tiger) on Feb.14, the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is often called the Lunar New Year, especially by people in mainland China and Taiwan. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern Festival. Chinese new year's Eve is known as Chúxī. It literally means "Year-pass Eve".
Chinese new year is the longest and most important festivity in the Lunar Calendar. The origin of Chinese new year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Ancient Chinese new year is a reflection on how the people behaved and what they believed in the most.
Celebrated in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese, Chinese new year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction.
As for Japanese New year, the Japanese celebrate New Year's Day on January 1 each year on the Gregorian Calendar. Before 1873, the date of the Japanese New Year (正月, shōgatsu?) was based on the Chinese lunar calendar and celebrated at the beginning of spring, just as the contemporary Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese New Years are celebrated to this day. However, in 1873, five years after the Meiji Restoration, Japan adopted the Gregorian calendar, so the first day of January is the official New Year's Day in modern Japan. It is considered by most Japanese to be one of the most important annual festivals and has been celebrated for centuries with its own unique customs.

When was the start of the CHINESE NEW YEAR in our 1976?
Every year the Chinese new year is supposed to start on a different day because the chinese calendar follows the lunar year. My husband and I have debated whether or not he was born in the year of the dragon. He was born January 19, 1976.
Answer: Your husband:
Year - Yin Wood Rabbit
Month - Yin Earth Cow
*Day - Yang Metal Horse
Hour - ?
*Contrary to popular belief, DAY, NOT YEAR, is most relevant to the individual, especially when it comes to determining personal relationships and compatibility.
Also, the start of the Chinese zodiac year is not Chinese Lunar New Year's day, but actually lichun, i.e. "start of spring" - specifically the first day of the Tiger month, usually around the 4th of February, but could be 3rd, 5th, or even 6th (like in 1976's Yang Fire Dragon year, for example). This is because the 12 animals, more properly known in Chinese fate-calculation as the "12 earthly branches", together with the 10 heavenly stems (Yin-Yang with 5 elements), are solar-based.
Dates:
1. Yin Wood Rabbit: February 5, 1975 - February 5, 1976
2. Yang Fire Dragon: February 6, 1976 - February 4, 1977

- What are the special food items people prepare or eat during Chinese new year? (if you can provide 8 examples it would be perfect)
- Why do people prepare these foods during Chinese new year? Do these food items have any symbolic meaning?
Answer: here are some that i know of (also used wikipedia)
Buddha's delight(traditional Chinese: 羅漢齋; simplified Chinese: 罗汉斋; pinyin: luóhàn zhāi)
An elaborate vegetarian dish served by Chinese families on the eve and the first day of the New Year. A type of black hair-like algae, pronounced "fat choy" in Cantonese, is also featured in the dish for its name, which sounds like "prosperity". Hakkas usually serve kiu nyuk (Chinese: 扣肉; pinyin: kòuròu) and ngiong tiu fu.
Fish
Is usually eaten on the eve of Chinese new year. The pronunciation of fish (魚yú) makes it a homophone for "surpluses"(餘yú).
Jau gok (Chinese: 油角)
The main Chinese new year dumpling. It is believed to resemble ancient Chinese gold ingots (simplified Chinese: 金元宝; traditional Chinese: 金元寶; pinyin: jīn yuán bǎo)
Jiaozi dumplings
Eaten traditionally in northern China because the preparation is similar to packaging luck inside the dumpling, which is later eaten.
Mandarin oranges
Mandarin oranges are the most popular and most abundant fruit during Chinese new year – jin ju (Chinese: 金橘子; pinyin: jīn júzi) translation: golden tangerine/orange or kam (Chinese: 柑; pinyin: gum) in Cantonese.
Melon seed/Kwatji(Chinese: 瓜子; pinyin: gwāzi)
Other variations include sunflower and pumpkin seeds
Nian gao (Chinese: 年糕)
Most popular in eastern China (Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai) because its pronunciation is a homophone for "a more prosperous year". Nian gao is also popular in the Philippines because of its large Chinese population and is known as tikoy there. Known as Chinese new year pudding, nian gao is made up of glutinous rice flour, wheat starch, salt, water, and sugar. The colour of the sugar used determines the colour of the pudding (white or brown).
Noodles
Families may serve uncut noodles, which represent longevity and long life, though this practice is not limited to the new year.
Sweets
Sweets and similar dried fruit goods are stored in a red or
black Chinese candy box.
Bakkwa
Chinese salty-sweet dried meat which is trimmed of the fat, sliced, marinated and then smoked for later consumption or as a gift.
Yushengs or Yee sangs (Chinese: 鱼生) Raw fish salad.
Eating this salad is said to bring good luck. This dish is usually eaten on the seventh day of the New Year, but may also be eaten throughout the period.

Im just curious.
Even though, Im chinese, Chinese new year, is just like a average, ordinary day for me.
All, my chinese friends get a red packet with money varying from 100 dollars-3000 dollars. (I dont get a penny)
anyway, do people go to festivals?
-----
what exactly do they do on Chinese new year?
Answer: personally i feel that Chinese new year is a great way for relatives to get together. on the eve of Chinese new year there's a reunion dinner where the family is supposed to get together and sit down for a meal.
the next day people go visiting at each other's place with 2 mandarin oranges. i suppose they are a sign of wishing each other prosperity and well being for the year. red packets are given by the married elders to those who are not married.
oh and Chinese new year is also associated with eating because there are a bunch of Chinese new year goodies usually only available in that period of time, like pineapple tarts and sliced barbecue pork
