When dieting, and what have you, how important is your Bmi number, and is a good indication of much weight you need to loose?
Answer: Bmi is Body Mass Index and it is nothing more than statistics based on averages. Bmi is only a small indicator, body fat % and water % are much more important. Bmi does not take into account the three different body types which is a very big flaw in the system. For example a very muscular people can have a bad Bmi while their body fat might be below 15%. I am not a big fan of Bmi, but it is a place to start.

Answer: Yeah that's a bit low, a healthy Bmi would be around 20, give or take a point or two. You might want to try a high carb diet with a lot of protein. Also, you might want to try to drink one protien shake a day in addition to your current meals. Whatever you do DO NOT eat fatty, greasy foods to gain weight, this can lead to diabetis or heart disease later in life.

What is the difference between BMI and Body Composition?

I went to the Walgreens Wellness Bus and get a neat little health report card kind of thing. However, Im confused about some of the phrases on the results. What is the difference between Bmi and Body Composition? I have a Bmi of 20.6 and a Body Composition of 9% What do they mean? Could someone please help me interpret them?
Answer: Bmi is your body mass index and it's calculated using your height and weight. Therefore, it won't take muscle mass into account at all. Finding your body composition is a little more complicated. Therefore, it tells you your percentage of fat. For men, I believe a range of 7-11% is pretty lean and healthy, where as women have a rage of 9-13% or so (don't quote me on this). For women it's higher because we're childbearing ;)

Hi, I am just wondering if they are at all accurate. I fell they certainly are not. I am 5 7" tall and weigh 165 pounds. Everyone tells me Im a little on the skinny side, but I also have a lot of muscle. As we all know when it comes to weight muscle > fat. I have a Bmi of 25.8. So, apparantly, I must be overweight (sarcasm). Where can I find a more accurate Bmi calculator?

Answer: Bmi is very inaccurate and is an outdated tool developed by the government to track statistical data. It does not take into account body composition, so most elite athletes with extra muscle mass and little bodyfat will register high on the scale, and anorexics low on the scale. The best thing to do is get your bodyfat percentage tested. You can do this yourself with hand calipers, or find someone to do it for you (many health clubs have this service). Impedence scales and other such devices are very inaccurate, so calipers are your most accurate and viable means (total water immersion is actually the most accurate but not viable for most people).

Can a BMI calculator tell the difference between muscle and fat?

Im a naturally thin person (Im 55" and normally about 100 lbs.), but Im also very athletic. During the cross country season Im often 108-110 lbs. because muscle weighs more than fat. Whenever I calculate my Bmi it says that I have a higher percentage of body fat when Im more in shape, even though I know this is not accurate. Is there a Bmi calculator available that can distinguish between fat and muscle?
Answer: Nope Bmi does not measure body fat percentage, it's merely a comparison of height and weight and takes no account of frame size, muscle mass, etc. The only way to get an accurate body fat reading is by DEXA, hydrostatic weighing or body fat callipers.
