What are the two ending of GREAT EXPECTATIONS?
I have to know the two different endings of the book "Great expectations" by Charles Dickens but i dont know what they are. Can you describe please?
Answer: The original ending was changed by Charles Dickens, because it wasn't a happy ending and his friend and fellow author, Wilkie Collins, objected to it. That ending shows Estella having already remarried to a doctor and, thus, being separated from Pip forever. This http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/victorianweb/authors/dickens/ge/ending.html is the original ending, which was discarded by Charles Dickens. This site http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/english/melani/novel_19c/dickens/ending.html tells you a bit more about the original ending.
The second ending written by Charles Dickens, the one he used, hints that Estella and Pip will get together eventually. This http://www.classicreader.com/book/52/59/ is the last chapter of Great expectations as it was published, as we know it.

How is GREAT EXPECTATIONS relevant to a modern audience?
Great expectations by Charles Dickens deals with a number of social issues including social class, abusive relationships and laws governing prisoners. Would Pip have encountered similar issues if he lived in modern times? How is the novel relevant to a modern audience?
Id be so grateful if you could help :)
Answer: Some social issues never disappear. Some people with a narcissistic personality type, or a person who has no confidence in themself must control an another human being to feel they have any self worth. This is why Miss Havisham raised Estella as she did.
We still see this type of behavior today. Many parents live vicariously though their children, even to the point of dictating how they should think.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS?
Hi, I have a project to do about the story called Great expectations by Charles Dickens, and I have to act it (skit) and I want to be Pip, what could I say? I dont have any partner by my self?
Answer: Then I would suggest a monologue or soliloquy where Pip expresses his innermost feelings to himself. Pick any one of a dozen key scenes or consider several short scenes from throughout the novel.
You could pick an early scene where Pip is frightened because the man on the moor threatened him and bade him come back with a file and vittles. You can imagine what thoughts would be going through the young Pip's mind. Should he tell Joe or his sister? Is there really a young man who will harm them if he fails to do as the convict tells him? Will Mrs. Joe realize he stole some food? All of these questions, he give voice to.
Or pick a scene where he has just met the beautiful, but haughty Estella. What does he think of her? How does she make him fee? Or the first time he meets the strange and mysterious Miss Havisham.
A more creative project might be to take two characters and have an imaginary conversation- one that could have taken place in the the novel, but did not. Dickens is sort of vague about whether Estella and Pip are together at the end (there are two endings and the second ending suggests they did, but it is only a suggestion. You could extend the story and end it with a conversation between Pip and Estella or anyone else.
You could also conduct a one sided dialogue where you take one part and the other person's responses are clearly understood, but only by what your character is saying- they aren't actually voiced.
Have fun with this- there isn't really a right or wrong way to do this.
And I would add that Pip is an incredibly complex character- a young boy who yearns to be a gentleman, but he becomes terribly conflicted when he realizes his rise in society has come at the terrible cost of his relationship with Joe. He feels guilty throughout this novel at the snobbish, shallow man he has become and he realizes at the end just how false all his hope and dreams where. If you capture this, then you have captured the essence of Pip.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS?
I am doing a report on Ms. Havisham, (from Great expectations by Charles Dickens), and i need help with these questions. If you can answer any of them it would be really helpful, thanx :)
age?
voice quality?
occupation?--does she really have one?
friends?
animal likeness?
Answer: I don't believe her age is specified, nor is her 'voice quality' explored a lot. Her occupation is being a lady--being rich, basically. She's cut herself off from teh world and entombed herself into the single worst moment of her life, so she has no friends. Her companion is Estella, who she breeds into a maneater, and for awhile, Pip.
If I had to compare her to an animal...it'd be a buzzard. She seems sincerely buzzard-like to me, surrounded by all that decay.

What is the theme of GREAT EXPECTATIONS and how can I incorporate it in a collage?
I have to make a collage based on a theme in the book Great expectations, written by Charles Dickens. I know some of the themes but I cannot think of how I can incorporate it in a collage? Any ideas on the theme and how it can be incorportated in a collage is greatly appreciated
Answer: Some of the themes in Great expectations are social class, ambition and self-improvement, and crime, guilt, innocence (so says spark notes).
When I had to write essays for the book I wrote about importance of relationships and social classes.
To illustrate these themes you could always put together a collage of the finer things next to the "normal".
Or ambition with people running, mountain climbing, anything with people looking determined.
There was also unrequited love, so you make things that relate to love in the shape of a broken heart.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS?
What are some plot events in Great expectations that show that money doesnt guarentee happiness?
Answer: The exixtence of Ms. Havisham would attest to that fact. She's loaded, but do you see her smiling? No. She's miserable and bitter. The only joy she gets is having Estella crush young boys' hopes and dreams. There are probably other examples, but it's been over 7 years since I read that book, and it really wasn't all that good to begin with.

Many of the events from Dickens’s early life are mirrored in Great expectations, which, apart from David Copperfield, is his most autobiographical novel. In the book GREAT EXPECTATIONS, who makes signifigant sacrifices, and what were they?
In the book Great expectations, who makes signifigant sacrifices, and what were they? Did it show the charicteristics of thier true personality?
Answer: Joe Gargery makes the biggest, most significant sacrifices, in my opinion. He gives up Pip's indentures to be apprenticed to him in his work (see chapter 13 of the 1st book). By so doing, he is freeing Pip to go to Miss Havisham's as often as she wants and also to begin studying to become a gentleman. This means both a loss of money and the loss of a necessary worker to Joe, but he willingly and unselfishly does it because he loves Pip and refuses to stand in Pip's way.
Joe pays off all of Pip's debts (towards the end of the book, just after Magwitch dies) and keeps Pip from going to debtor's prison and doesn't even want any thanks. Again, he loves Pip and willingly makes himself much poorer for Pip's sake.
Joe also suffers in silence when Pip acts ashamed of him (that's what becoming a gentleman does for Pip), and loves him anyway. In fact, Joe never gets angry with Pip for his treatment of him, continues to love him, has patience with him and forgives him completely.
Joe is the best person in the entire book!

GREAT EXPECTATIONS-can someone give me a link or post the orignial ending and the edited ending?
Please, post the original ending of Great expectations (Charles Dickens) and the edited ending, or send links to websites that show the endings. Easy ten points to the first and best answer!! Thank you!
Answer: From http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/dickens/ge/ending.html the original ending was:
"It was four years more, before I saw herself. I had heard of her as leading a most unhappy life, and as being separated from her husband who had used her with great cruelty, and who had become quite renowned as a compound of pride, brutality, and meanness.
"I had heard of the death of her husband (from an accident consequent on ill-treating a horse), and of her being married again to a Shropshire doctor, who, against his interest, had once very manfully interposed, on an occasion when he was in professional attendance on Mr. Drummle, and had witnessed some outrageous treatment of her. I had heard that the Shropshire doctor was not rich, and that they lived on her own personal fortune.
"I was in England again — in London, and walking along Piccadilly with little Pip — when a servant came running after me to ask would I step back to a lady in a carriage who wished to speak to me. It was a little pony carriage, which the lady was driving; and the lady and I looked sadly enough on one another.
"I am greatly changed, I know; but I thought you would like to shake hands with Estella, too, Pip. Lift up that pretty child and let me kiss it!" (She supposed the child, I think, to be my child.)
"I was very glad afterwards to have had the interview; for, in her face and in her voice, and in her touch, she gave me the assurance, that suffering had been stronger than Miss Havisham's teaching, and had given her a heart to understand what my heart used to be. — based on the proof slip reproduced by Edgar Rosenberg in the W. W. Norton (1999) edition of Great expectations, p. 492."
The revised ending is the one which was published and is, thus, in the book. You can read the last chapter online at http://www.online-literature.com/dickens/greatexpectations/59/ The Literature Network.
