The Dark Prince Of Downtown
Spalding Gray moved to New York City in 1967, shortly after his mothers suicide, when he was 26. He lived with his girlfriend, Elizabeth LeCompte, in an apartment on Sixth Street and Avenue D, on the Lower East Side. To make ends meet, Gray occasionally worked as a stock boy, while LeCompte sold postcards at the front desk of the Guggenheim. But - Nell Casey, editor of the book The Journals of Spalding Gray, introduces excerpts from the actor and playwrights journals, which showcase an artist discovering his powers and seem to serve as a rough draft of his adult life. Why does the British public have to fund this nonsense regarding "The AGW Gravy Train", i.e. the Met Office?
Why does the British public have to fund this nonsense regarding "The AGW Gravy Train", i.e. the Met Office?
The British Met Office, with over 1,800 employees forecast “light rain” for today in my area of the UK, this forecast on the 17th July. Today is the twentieth; it is lashing with rain as fierce as I’ve seen for a long while. go on their website and the forecast has been amended to “heavy rain”.
This is proof enough that the Met Office are reporting either current or past events, not “forecasting” at all.
If they can’t tell what the weather is going to be like in less 72 hours time (this in a maritime climate), how on earth are we to believe any of their posturing on Climate Change?
Should’t they be told to concentrate on using this massive computer for the intended purpose, telling me whether I need a brolly or no, let alone more serious things?
Quote: Once, a strip of seaweed or a rheumatic hip were all that were needed to forecast the weather.
: Yesterday, however, the Met Office unveiled a £33 million super-computer that it hopes will be able to do the job with a little more precision.
The IBM machine is more powerful than 100,000 standard PCs combined. For the technically minded, that means it will have a speed of one petaflop, placing it among the world’s top 20 most powerful computers. It is capable of performing 125 trillion calculations per second..
For those less than technically minded, that means it may no longer be necessary for forecasters at the Met Office to look out of the window to find out what the weather is doing. End of quote

Cumbria on their advice has instituted a hosepipe ban, today we are told there will be floods, oh what a surprise, and the Met office got it wrong again. How do they have the nerve to lecture people on climate change?
The Met Office risks losing its lucrative deal to provide weather forecasts to the BBC after the corporation decided to put the contract out for tender for what is believed to be the first time since 1923, it emerged today.
The decision to invite rival forecasters to bid for the contract comes during a difficult spell for the Met Office, which is under fire following a series of botched predictions.

Weather Warning
Tuesday 20 July
WEATHER WARNING
Heavy, thundery rain will affect parts of Wales, southwest England, the Midlands and northern England today. As much as 50mm could fall in places, with a risk of localised flooding. Northeast Scotland will also see some heavy showers.
I dont think half of Britain could be called "local"!
I knew Id get a lecture about the difference between "climate" and "weather", so glad you didnt disappoint. You still havent explained why despite this powerful computer The Met Office cannot predict the weather, their traditional function.
But if I was a soldier I could take comfort in that these goons will know what the weather will be like in 200 years time, although not much use if I’m going into battle tomorrow.
EDIT @ A modest proposal:
Must say "well spotted" regarding the BBC contract with the Met Office.
Two months after May 2009 I make July 2009, when this computer should be up and running, although not fully until after the upgrade. It is still supposed to be one of the twentieth most powerful machines in the world, should it not be functioning even a tadge by now?
The connection I make between the lamentable record of the Met Office with weather forecasting and Climate Change is a very simple one, if they cannot be trusted to carry out their primary function of providing the military with weather forecasts (lets not forget The Met Office is part of The Ministry of Defence) how on earth can they be trusted to "forecast something of a much more complex nature, Global Warming?
Has it never crossed anyones mind that "Climate Change" is inexplicable to most people, thus with "smoke and mirrors" the Met Office has gained an enormous increase in its funding?
It’s no surprise the BBC h
Answer: I would say they fund it because they can. Bureacracies know that if they reduce spending, next years budget will be reduced. I will go out on a limb and predict sunshine here in Southern California and my predictions are nearly 100 per cent accurate and free. I joke because predicting rain in Britain seems pretty safe as well. To be fair, the weather reports here in So Cal are pretty accurate even though it is probably easier to predict a hotter day than a rainy day of which we get very few.

What are the chances the Met Office have the weather forecast wrong?
Ok, I know there is no definitive answer to this, but I am getting married on Friday and he forecast is pretty bleak!
I am hoping and praying that it turns out to be one of those unexpected days, when heavy rain and wind was predicted but instead its dry (sunny would be fab but Im not THAT optimistic anymore!).
Is it possible that the predictions on a Mon for the whole week, can change, and are they just an informed guess at this stage?
Answer: As an old forecaster, I have written many forecasts that were very wrong. But, the odds are, the forecast is more often, reasonably correct. The temperatures may be slightly off or winds stronger or weaker than forecast. One of the hardest is sky condition. That is often very true in the UK where moisture at various levels can quite drastically change in a moment's notice.
One of the other things to remember is that forecasters as a whole are a pessimistic bunch. They will slide the forecast towards the worst case if there are a lot of uncertainty in their mind.
So, to answer your question, yes, the forecast is most likely to change. A forecast is best described as an opinion of future events based on a person's education and experience in the forecasting. Depending on the forecast office, it often is one person or a small group (usually no more than 2 or 3) who put the forecast together.
That being said, the fact of the matter is, forecasts today at the four day forecast cycle are not too bad. In other words, the forecast is probably more correct than wrong. As your BIG day approaches, compare the forecast to the earlier forecast. If there is little change, or no change, that usually means that the forecaster has increasing confidence in that particular forecast. If it changes, the direction of that change is typically more correct.
This is just an observation from writing forecasts for nearly 40 years.
Good luck and Best wishes for your wedding.

Will i still get tan in this weather?
it said on bbc weather (and i checked the Met office weather forecast online)
that it would be 25c today,
the uk UV ranges from 1-7 - and today its 6! so i thought itd be really sunny & nice but theres cloud covering the sun. every now and then it peeps out from behind the clouds for like 1 minute! but then its back to grey again.
it feels warm but will i still get tan with these cloudy conditions?
Answer: During the Summer when the Sun is much higher in the sky it is possible to get a tan obviously during the Sunny periods but when a clouds blocks the Sun very little of the Sun's radiation is able to get through and be absorbed by your skin.
On high-thin overcast days it is very possible to get a tan as only part of the Suns radiation is being blocked from reaching you.
When the UV index is at 1 it is not worth the effort to sit outside. Just go n the house ad come back out when more Sun is able to make it right through the atmosphere.
When the UV index is at 7 your skin will be receiving a lot of the Sun's radiation so be careful. Start tanning with short exposures and as the melanin in you skin builds up your skin pigment will darken and then you can slowly increase exposure time.

Can I contact the Met Office to find my lost servant?
As a Monday afternoon jape/experiment, I inflated forty helium balloons to see whether they would lift an 86 year old groundskeeper. I tied the fellow the the balloons and stood back. Unfortunately, I wasnt prepared for the speed at which he would rise, so I was unable to prevent him hurtling up into the sky. Eventually his screams of terror faded into the distance, and I could no longer see him after a while.
Would the weather office be the best people to contact?
Answer: So that is what fouled the engines on my airship...
Sir, in the next few days you will be receiving:
- a bill from me for repairs to a 16-cylinder Daimler dirigible engine
- a summons to the local court for flouting numerous air traffic control byelaws
- a certificate for your deceased servant from the local branch of the Texas Bonehead Club.

should the met office and weather forecasters apologize for their incorrect weather forecasts?
Im not being harsh to them, its just ive been hearing all this stuff about weather warnings, about heavy snow, about blizzards, drifting snow, 2-5cm, etc. and then today i wake up here in birmingham and we have one the sunniest winter days ever, the sky was practically all blue, not a cloud in the sky, and i was left wondering how much more wrong could that weather forecast have being? shud these forecasters apologise for their horrendous predictions (p.s. we did get a little snow, but it was only for about 10 minutes and it was poor quality snow, you know, when they look like little polysterene balls)
well there were weather warnings for the midlands as well, so they were still wrong!
Answer: If my forecast is off badly, time permitting, I will always try to explain what happened to the weather and why my previous forecast was off on my next shift (unless I have days of in between).
I will use the the public weather discussion and write a short paragraph. I have always gone back to try to see how I did. If I did missed the forecast and found out why, I do not see a reason why I should not share this with other forecasters and of course the users of my forecasts. This also will tell the users that do I my quality check of my work. And like any paid worker who have users who depend on my work, sometimes I do think the users should know what happen.
But the users also must know that if my next shift is a very is a busy weather shift, that they will have know that I will be too busy to go back and explain what happen. They will have to trust me that I will find another future time to look back and study what happen. It is when we go back and look at our mistakes is when we learn and find clues that may help us in the future. No other training teaches us more...and yes old dogs can learn new tricks! This is just my opinion only.
However, I do must admit that I have a bad habit of not going to proof read my anwers on Yahoo Answers! :-)

Does the Met Office explanation of the current cold weather make sense?
The Met Office says:
"over the past three weeks the Atlantic air has been ‘blocked’ and cold air has been flowing down from the Arctic or the cold winter landmass of Europe."
"However, it is not cold everywhere in the world. North-east America, Canada, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and south-west Asia have all seen temperatures above normal – in many places by more than 5 °C, and in parts of northern Canada, by more than 10 °C."
"The current cold weather in the UK is part of the normal regional variations that take place in the winter season. It doesn’t tell us anything about climate change, which has to be looked at in a global context and over longer periods of time."
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/2010/pr20100106b.html
Do you think that makes sense?
Bob - its north-east America, not north-east USA.
Answer: yes it makes sense. its a lot like what we got last january, but before that its more like the regular weather we got here before 30 years ago. i remember we used to get snowed in every other year until the mid 80s, then it went away and we only got a dusting. looks like its to do with the arctic oscillation
