MET OFFICE in the Media: 29 January 2012 « MET OFFICE News Blog
Today the Mail on Sunday published a story written by David Rose entitled “Forget global warming – it’s Cycle 25 we need to worry about”.
Can I contact the MET OFFICE to find my lost servant?
As a Monday afternoon jape/experiment, I inflated forty helium balloons to see whether they would lift an 86 year old groundskeeper. I tied the fellow the the balloons and stood back. Unfortunately, I wasnt prepared for the speed at which he would rise, so I was unable to prevent him hurtling up into the sky. Eventually his screams of terror faded into the distance, and I could no longer see him after a while.
Would the weather office be the best people to contact?
Answer: So that is what fouled the engines on my airship...
Sir, in the next few days you will be receiving:
- a bill from me for repairs to a 16-cylinder Daimler dirigible engine
- a summons to the local court for flouting numerous air traffic control byelaws
- a certificate for your deceased servant from the local branch of the Texas Bonehead Club.

What do you know about the MET OFFICE winter predictions?
My source spins quite a tale about the Met office. The gist of it is this: The Met office publicly published winter predictions for Europe for mild temperatures. At the same time, it apparently told the government (UK) in confidence that this winter would be more severe than average.
I realize my source is a skeptical website but regardless, does anyone have any concrete information on this? It would seem to me that if the UK government had this info yet did not bolster salt levels or winter maintenance budgets, I would imagine the public might be irritated by that.
(Note, this is my third attempt at this question. My links are obviously being the problem. This time, I only have a news source. If they stop questions with news sources as the links we have a problem.)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1343863/Met-Office-knew-Decembers-big-freeze-coming-hushed-up.html
Eric, I know that it (my previous question) has not been deleted but it has been removed from the main stream. Can you see it in the Global Warming section? I cant.
Answer: I have an article from the Sidney Morning Herald, apparently reprinted from the Telegraph. It says the Met was predicting a warm winter as late as November:
"They {the Met} said it would be mild and damp, and between one degree and one and a half degrees warmer than average."
I really don't know what they knew or didn't know, or knew and kept secret. I really don't care. I know they predicted a warm winter (again), and it has been bitter cold (again). It might be good to see what is on the Met's own website, although I'm sure their predictions have been scrubbed already.
This is not the first time the Met has gotten into hot water for completely missing a weather prediction. They said last winter would be warmer than average and the summer of 2010 would be "a barbeque." When in fact:
"Again, accuracy is the issue, with the Met office coming under severe criticism over the prediction of a barbeque summer last July. The UK suffered a washout.
And its forecast of a mild winter attracted derision as temperatures plunged to as low as -22C in parts of Britain."
The BBC is considering dropping the Met as their weather source and going with a New Zealand firm which offers more accurate predictions at a better price. And this is the outfit we trust when it comes to long term predictions???

I can make the same predictions as the UK MET OFFICE, but without a meteorology degree - should they employ me?
They recently said "there is a 50% possibility that this winter will be a cold one!"
So their considered professional opinion is it may be cold, or it may just as likely be mild. I could have told them that.
Answer: Anyone could make a guess like that but they go into the forecast models and look at a wide range of them. All forecast models show a different pattern and without the ability to understand what you are looking at and have the physics and math background involved in a meteorology degree, there's a limitation between a guess anyone could make and an understanding of what all the models show.

British MET OFFICE is incorrect yet again, are they in the pay of Moscow?
On the day that the British Met office announce that there is definitely Global Warming, they changed the temperature forecast for the UK from minus 7 to minus 2 Celsius, a difference of 3.5 times.
If they are so bad at forecasting that they cannot even get the temperature right for 2 days time, how on earth can this nest of commie vipers be correct about so called Climate Change?
Answer: Dear, oh dear, oh dear; what are you going on about?
Shall we take an objective look at how the Met office are doing?
Here is the prior forecast for what the weather was expected to be doing right now http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_temp.html and here are the live observations from 125 reporting stations around the UK http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/observations/
Each station reports dozens of metrics at one hour intervals; seven of which are reported on the observations page. So that’s 125 x 7 x 24 = 21,000 reported observations per day. Of the 875 live observations, every single one of them is accurate to within a small margin of error. Use the links to get recent forecasts and observations and the level of accuracy continues to be exceptionally high. In fact, I can’t spot any part of the country where the recorded temp and the forecast temp differed by more than 3°C.
Do not make the mistake of comparing incompatible weather forecasts. For example – a national forecast gives temperatures for major towns and cities with the temps adjusted to sea-level. Regional forecasts do not always adjust temps in this manner.
For example, I live out in the country at an altitude of about 400 metres. The current forecast temp is minus 2°C, the current temp outside is minus 6.0°C which, allowing for the adiabatic lapse rate (2.7°C difference) and the urban heat island effect (0.5°C to 1.0°C) means that the temp is between 0.3°C and 0.8°C colder than forecast.
Please can you tell me which forecast predicted temperatures of minus 7°C. I have every forecast since 1998 archived so can easily verify the facts for myself. The only recent reference to a temp of –7°C is that this is what was forecast as a minimum in some of the sheltered and low-lying areas of Scotland. The actual temp reached was –7.8°C at Carterhouse in the Borders Region of Scotland.
Here’s an experiment you can do – go to the current weather forecast (Met office, BBC or whoever) and save the page to your computer. Then in a day, two days or whatever time scale applies, return to the forecast and compare it to what actually happened. It won’t always be right but, if you’re objective, you’ll see that the Met office has an accuracy in excess of 90%; which in a country that has some of the hardest weather in the world to predict, is pretty good going.
As for “minus 7 to minus 2 Celsius, a difference of 3.5 times” How do you work this out? The Celsius temperature scale is one that is relative to zero, as with all such scales, no mathematical operators can be applied. For example – the exact same temps in °F are 19.4°F and 28.4°F and there’s certainly not a difference of 3.5 times.
If you want to multiple temps then you have to first convert them to an absolute scale – Kelvin or Rankine. In which case minus 7 becomes 266.15K and minus 2 becomes 271.15K.
Also, let’s keep things in context. Assuming that the temp was forecast to be minus 7°C and was revised to minus 2°C, what you’re looking at is one metric out of 21,000 per day, in one day out of the 60,000 on record in an area that covers less than one five hundredth of the Earth’s land surface. So in perspective you’re attempting to draw conclusions based on one half a trillionth of what you should be looking at.
And in any event, as you well know (or should do), climate and weather are two different things. Why are deniers so quick to point that out when it suits their cause but then totally ignore their own protestations whenever it suits them?

MET OFFICE.?
Do you believe their forecast anymore? They dont seem to get it right these days.
Answer: Be it the Met office, Environment Canada or the US National Weather Service. They all have to work within the laws of averages and the observations they have made over a relatively short period of time. They are bound to have streaks where they get it right most of the time followed by streaks of "incorrect" forecasts. Floods, droughts and other long-term anomalies are much more difficult to forecast than "will it rain today." They do learn from these event and adjust their computer programs that forecast.

How does the MET OFFICE measure the millimetres of rain that has fallen?
How do they decide that for example 40mms of rain has fallen? What do they use to collect the level of rain as standard? Just watching the news today about the flash floods and they said that 90mms fell today. I am sure that more than that level collected in my bin today!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8551416.stm
I guess Bob you mean that you can guess/predict 75-100 years in the future when your to old to ever be challenged.... sounds fishy to me!
Answer: There is some logic to the notion that long-term climate change is easier to predict than short-term weather. It's a bit like saying that I can safely predict that the Yankees will win at least 90 games this year but I don't know how they'll do on opening day (and no, that doesn't mean I'm becoming a fan).
However, seasonal forecasts are a little different. And intermediate forecasts (few years out) have been wrong so far.

South West England weather forecast - MET OFFICE
Met office 5-day weather forecast for South West England, 15-day and 30-day forecast for the UK.
What are the chances the MET OFFICE have the weather forecast wrong?
Ok, I know there is no definitive answer to this, but I am getting married on Friday and he forecast is pretty bleak!
I am hoping and praying that it turns out to be one of those unexpected days, when heavy rain and wind was predicted but instead its dry (sunny would be fab but Im not THAT optimistic anymore!).
Is it possible that the predictions on a Mon for the whole week, can change, and are they just an informed guess at this stage?
Answer: As an old forecaster, I have written many forecasts that were very wrong. But, the odds are, the forecast is more often, reasonably correct. The temperatures may be slightly off or winds stronger or weaker than forecast. One of the hardest is sky condition. That is often very true in the UK where moisture at various levels can quite drastically change in a moment's notice.
One of the other things to remember is that forecasters as a whole are a pessimistic bunch. They will slide the forecast towards the worst case if there are a lot of uncertainty in their mind.
So, to answer your question, yes, the forecast is most likely to change. A forecast is best described as an opinion of future events based on a person's education and experience in the forecasting. Depending on the forecast office, it often is one person or a small group (usually no more than 2 or 3) who put the forecast together.
That being said, the fact of the matter is, forecasts today at the four day forecast cycle are not too bad. In other words, the forecast is probably more correct than wrong. As your BIG day approaches, compare the forecast to the earlier forecast. If there is little change, or no change, that usually means that the forecaster has increasing confidence in that particular forecast. If it changes, the direction of that change is typically more correct.
This is just an observation from writing forecasts for nearly 40 years.
Good luck and Best wishes for your wedding.
Married 34 years ago during a ice storm in the Midwest U.S. Seems funny now. Weather was not important and we had a fun wedding in spite of the cold and ice.

What qualifications for MET OFFICE job?
Hey im thinking about applying for a job to work somewhere such as the Met office. Does anyone know what exact qualifications are needed for a job in this area of work?
Do you need Geography?
thanks
Answer: Hello
The Connexions website at http://www.connexions-direct.com/jobs4u/ provides information on specific employment areas. To find out more about a career in the Met office, add ‘Meteorologist’ to the search box for general information on the job role, working conditions and employment opportunities. The ‘further details’ link leads to more information on routes into this career as well as contact details for various relevant organisations.
Employment in this area is competitive, particularly for research posts. The most usual route is with a degree in meteorology, maths or physics, although computer science, environmental studies, physical geography or electronics are also relevant. Entry requirements for these degrees may vary but normally at least two A levels, including maths and/or physical science, and five GCSEs (A*- C) including English and maths, or equivalent qualifications, will be required.
There are also support-level meteorological jobs at the Met office although competition is high for these too - at least 2 A levels at grade C or above (Maths and physics are often preferred) or equivalent, are generally required.
It may be possible to access work placements offered by the Met office or other meteorological organisations as a useful way to gain relevant work experience.
You may find it helpful to check out the following websites for further information including opportunities for work experience, training and employment:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/ - The Met office; this includes a section on 'Learning'; training information is included in this link.
http://www.rmets.org/ - Royal Meteorological Society(RMS); the professional body for anyone whose profession or interests are connected with weather. The RMS site lists all meteorology-related degrees and postgraduate qualifications.
http://www.semta.org.uk/ - Sector Skills Council for Science Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SEMTA).
Allow time for research as you may see other links to follow up. I hope this helps with your query and wish you well in your plans for a future career.
