Born to Be Wilde
Until recently, the British actor and writer Stephen Fry had an apartment on the Upper East Side, in the Carlyle House. Fry loves New York, and he liked his apartment, but he sold it to his upstairs neighbor, Jay McInerney, who plans to build a staircase between the two floors and spread himself out. Fry realized he was the only person in New York who could allow the McInerney family to expand into four bedrooms without terrible upheaval and expense. Nothing else would have worked, Fry says. It would have seemed churlish not to sell it to them. For fear of seeming churlish, Fry gave up one of his homes. He is an unusually polite man. When we met a few weeks ago in central London, Fry arrived with a look that hinted at annoyance: his punctuality made it impossible for him to apologize for being late. He smiled, raised his eyebrows, shrugged -- he has begun to charm you before he has spoken.. Ian Parker profile of Stephen Fry, star of new movie about Oscar Wildes life; like Wilde, Fry is homosexual, a wit, and a kind of show-biz intellectual; also like Wilde, Fry has been to prison and been seen to stumble; most notable in Wilde-Fry parallels is intensity of medias interest in private life made public; photos (L)

Stephen Fry: Paris terror shootings desecrated our freedoms
I dont usually use this kind of language to describe it, but I think it is a blasphemy, that the things I most cherish and hold sacred, which are free thought and freedom of expression on which our culture is entirely founded, have been desecrated.

One Good Tale Deserves Another
Not only is Stephen Fry a first-rate comic actor, he is also an accomplished and talented light novelist. His new novel, REVENGE (Random House, $23.95), set between 1980 and the present day, is a retelling of the swashbuckling classic The Count of Monte Cristo. Dumass chestnut might not be the greatest novel ever written, but it certainly has one of literatures greatest plots, and Fry takes full advantage of it, using the elements that work and altering the narrative to suit his own thematic purposes. The 17-year-old Ned Maddstone is, at the storys opening, almost disgustingly perfect. The adored only son of an old-school Conservative politician, he is in his last year at Harrow. He is a star cricket player, his schools head boy, bound for Oxford; newly in love with a beautiful and brilliant girl, he is a powerful focus of envy among his fellows, although he is far too modest and diffident to realize it. Three jealous rivals arrange to have him arrested for marijuana possession. In police custody, he finds himself at the center of a political scheme involving I.R.A. terrorists. A scandal is impending, and a poisonous government agent, to save his own career, arranges for Ned to be spirited away to an insane asylum on a distant Scandinavian island. There he languishes for many a long year. But as readers of Dumas will predict, he eventually makes a dramatic escape, returns to London in disguise and descends on the terrified men responsible for wrecking his life. Fry has worked in any number of clever references to Dumas -- some of the characters names, for example, are anagrams or near anagrams for their counterparts in Monte Cristo -- but the book is both a highly readable thriller and a viable novel in its own right. Fry has his own ideas about revenge, ideas that diverge from those of Dumas, and he keeps us guessing right up to the storys unpredictable ending. Brooke Allen. Looking, Apparently Anywhere, for a Cure
THE HIPPOPOTAMUS By Stephen Fry 292 pages. Random House. $22. The title of Stephen Frys rollicking new novel comes from T. S. Eliots poem The Hippopotamus, an early satirical poem, which suggests that natural man for all his weaknesses (i.e., the hippopotamus) is more welcome in heaven than an idolatrous clergy. But while Mr. Fry takes Eliots theme and gives it a clever spin, his voice is decidedly his own: slangy, frantic and enthusiastically ribald, closer in spirit and style to Monty Python than anything Eliot ever dreamed of.

Read the Book, Darling
EVELYN WAUGHS satiric novel Vile Bodies was published in 1930, but its set in a sort of nonfuturistic future. There has been no mechanical or scientific advance, Waugh wrote in an authors note describing the book, but existing social tendencies have become more marked. Partygoing, for one. What a lot of parties, one of the characters complains in the books most famous passage. Almost naked parties in St. Johns Wood, parties in flats and studios and houses and ships and hotels and night clubs, in windmills and swimming baths. parties at Oxford where one drank brown sherry and smoked Turkish cigarettes, dull dances in London and comic dances in Scotland and disgusting dances in Paris. Waughs future is essentially an amped-up version of the late 1920s, when the fashionable London set -- or the bright young things, as they were known -- were out every night, drinking, doing drugs and swapping partners. And he was possibly more prophetic than he knew; what the book describes turns out to be remarkably like our own era: a reckless, free-spending, celebrity-obsessed, pleasure-seeking tabloid culture thats out of control and headed nowhere good. Through its pages stride characters who are virtually prototypes for the likes of Conrad Black, Liz Smith and Cindy Adams, the Hilton sisters, Billy Graham (in his Bush-counseling mode), and the vodka-guzzling crowd that was at Soho House last night.. Charles McGrath article on Stephen Frys new movie Bright Young Things, adaptation of Evelyn Waughs satiric novel Vile Bodies; says that by being so faithful to book, Fry loses sight of its snarling anarchic spirit; says while Waugh based many of his characters on real, recognizable people, Fry has made period piece that is charming but not in way Waugh intended; photo (M)

A Gentleman Gets Even For a Life Interrupted
REVENGE By Stephen Fry 316 pages. Random House. $23.95. The plot is an old-fashioned potboiler: the hero, who is about to marry his beloved, is falsely accused of a crime and sent away to prison for many years. There he becomes the protégé of an older prisoner, who teaches him history, languages and science, and who leaves him a fortune. The hero eventually escapes and sets about getting revenge on the men who stole his youth. This plot, of course, comes from The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumass classic, but it has been lifted and updated by Stephen Fry for his new novel, Revenge. The result is a highly readable, if thoroughly hokey story that showcases the talents Mr. Fry demonstrated in his earlier novels, The Liar and The Hippopotamus: extreme verbal facility, an antic sense of humor and a Monty Python-esque gift for sending up Britains class system and its pretensions.. STEPHEN FRY Goes West And Adopts New Look: Jeeves in Cowboy Boots
Stephen Fry has sampled the American West and pronounced it good. The British actor, best known to American audiences as Jeeves on Masterpiece Theater and as the title character in the recent film Peters Friends, has the Texas twang down pat, and during a recent interview in New York he paced his hotel room wearing a new pair of snakeskin cowboy boots. The accent and the boots were souvenirs of his stay in Texas for a guest role as Oscar Wilde on Ned Blessing, a nouvelle Western series that CBS plans to introduce in the fall. Mr. Fry has fond memories of the shoot, which took place near Austin on an authentic-looking Old West set. I was actually able to say, after lunch, Well, I guess Ill mosey down to the corral, he said. And I did, literally, mosey down to the corral.
