Raptors at Rush Hour, Homeward Bound
THE augurs of ancient Rome predicted fortune and ruin based on the flight and behavior of birds, believing that bird activity revealed the hidden patterns of life and the plans of the gods. Hawks and eagles portended the destiny of kings. The sight of hundreds of sharp-shinned hawks riding a northeasterly wind, or a peregrine falcon dropping into a 140-mile-an-hour stoop to nab a songbird, would give even the most seasoned soothsayer pause. But on the beach in Cape May, N.J., on a mid-September day, these were merely signs that summer was ending. Merlin chasing a gull, 2 oclock, shouted Michael Retter, spotting a small, dark falcon. In almost perfect unison, the people standing on the wooden observation deck set up on the beach pulled out their binoculars and followed the flight and pursuit of the two birds; in a blink they passed over an open field dotted with salt marshes and disappeared beyond the distant tree line.. A Wasteland That Was Once the Cradle of Hope
If timing is everything, then the timeliest film to be seen this weekend in New York, as Japan reels from the shock of the direst nuclear accident in its history, is Pripyat. This sad and sobering Austrian-made documentary takes its title from the irradiated wasteland less than five miles from the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl, where an accident in Unit 4 in 1986 led to the evacuation of 116,000 people.. Paradise on the Pacific Flyway
MALHEUR: The word, misfortune in French, echoes through the vast expanse of southeastern Oregons high desert. Half howl, half curse, it is a bitter memory left behind by French-Canadian fur trappers who came in the 1820s to hunt beaver. They lost their horses and supplies, and were outwitted by the local Indian tribes. The place brought them nothing but misfortune. The name stuck. In this little-known corner of Oregon, a national forest, a county, a lake and the largest wetlands wildlife refuge in the state are all called Malheur (pronounced mal-HYOOR).. ALLAIRE: RICH IN HISTORY AND WILDLIFE
ALONG the banks of the Manasquan River, amid the willow oak and black locust trees and patches of greenbriar, a brisk autumn morning can be the way it must have been 170 years ago. In the early 1800s, these woods, in what is now Allaire State Park, were thick with the smells of iron furnaces and the sounds of foundrymen and their families, who lived in row houses. Iron was the lifeblood of Allaire Village. It was a company town on the northern fringes of the Pine Barrens during the very outset of the Industrial Revolution, a time when even ironmakers were not in that great a hurry. It was begun as the Monmouth Iron Works and later was named for an industrial entrepreneur, James P. Allaire.

In Parables, a Harsh Beauty
Mojtaba Raeis mystical meditation, Birth of a Butterfly, was filmed in the mountains of northwestern Iran, where the peoples elemental relationship with nature is colored by an intense spiritual faith. Consisting of three parables in which that faith is tested, the movie suggests that Christianity and Western culture have no monopoly on turning out religious kitsch. Although Birth of a Butterfly is comparatively restrained and tasteful as these things go, it imitates the Hollywood technique of using gushy music to underscore moments of revelation. The protagonist of one parable is a shining-eyed teacher who leaves civilization behind to trek through the wilderness and instruct the children in a remote mountain village. Exuding a charismatic radiance, he becomes an informal adviser to the community. When one man who has lost a cow wonders where he can find it, the teacher suggests he look in a certain field. Another man is waiting for his son who disappeared a year ago to return. The teacher counsels patience and says the son will soon come back.. A Warm Beginning and End, Surrounding an Energetic Middle
Mostly Mozart makes things easy for a compulsive listener. If you got to Avery Fisher Hall early enough on Wednesday evening, you could have caught Alisa Weilersteins preconcert recital, devoted fully to a supple, warm-toned performance of Bachs Suite No.5 for Unaccompanied Cello (BWV 1011). At the main concert, Thomas Dausgaard led the festival orchestra in descriptive works by Mendelssohn and Beethoven, with the violinist Gil Shaham joining the assembled forces for a Mozart Violin Concerto. And then there was the late show at the Kaplan Penthouse, where Mr. Shaham and the pianist Orli Shaham, his sister, played Mozart Violin Sonatas for an hour. As it turned out, the short programs at either end of the evening afforded the most unalloyed pleasure, but the orchestral concert had its moments as well, most of them in Mr. Dausgaards energetic, clear-eyed reading of Beethovens Pastoral Symphony. Using a moderate-size chamber orchestra, with the violins split antiphonally (largely the standard for Mostly Mozarts resident orchestra now), Mr. Dausgaards reading made balance and transparency paramount.. CULTURAL RICHES OF INDIA AT THE MET
A staggering variety of exotic riches will open to the public at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday in an exhibition called simply India! The exhibition includes embroidered temple hangings, an enormous crimson-and-gold royal tent, jeweled daggers and feathered headdresses, a sultans cannon and an emperors wine cup, ivory-inlaid instruments and intricately illustrated manuscripts, turban jewels and silver-and-gold elephant goads, a carpet of which every millimeter is encrusted with seed pearls, diamonds and other gems, and paintings and watercolors whose subjects range from harem gardens to sultans riding elephants to princely deer hunters to entwined lovers to a fat begum. At Lincoln Center, where what is billed as the largest showcase of Indian performing arts ever assembled outside India begins tonight, there are dancers and folk singers, an elaborately costumed presentation of kathakali dance theater, Ravi Shankar performing a raga with the New York Philharmonic, and two world premieres of works by Indian composers, among other offerings. And elsewhere around the city - at the American Museum of Natural History, at Asia Society, at the Museum of Modern Art and in other galleries, theaters and libraries - New Yorkers can discover India in manifestations ranging from authentic royal and classical Indian food to Indian films, wildlife, regal court costumes, department store promotions, poetry readings, Indian crafts, art auctions, courses on such subjects as Buddhism, Indian cave temples and village life, and workshops on Sanskrit, Indian dance and Islamic calligraphy.
Review/Performance Art; Holding Hu-person-ity Up to Ridicule
Im in a rotten mood and I bet you are too, announced Rachel Rosenthal in the opening moments of her performance piece Pangaean Dreams, which had its East Coast premiere at Alice Tully Hall on Tuesday evening as part of Lincoln Centers Serious Fun festival. The 64-year-old Los Angeles-based performance artist, who arrived on the stage in a wheelchair, angrily lamented the destruction of wildlife by a recent pesticide spill in the Sacramento River. Then she pulled herself up, peeled off assorted casts and bandages and began comparing her history of bone fractures and other physical problems with the breakup of Pangaea, the mythical supercontinent that may have existed 250 million years ago. For Ms. Rosenthal, that supercontinent serves an all-purpose metaphor for a mystical unity of mind, body and spirit on the earth that has been shattered by human evolution.

ORNAMENTAL GARDENS Live but motionless, a hunter on horseback leaps over a gate at the Ladew Topiary Gardens north of Jacksonville, Md., one of dozens of achievements there in the art of training and trimming trees and shrubs into ornamental shapes. There are swans on waves, coaxed from Japanese yew, as well as a unicorn, a top hat and windowed walls. And there are 15 flower gardens. All were designed and planted by Harvey S. Lifes Creatures Glow Until Violence Darkens
There are more ways than one to view Hukkle, the luminous directorial debut of Gyorgi Palfi, a Hungarian filmmaker whose intensified, childs-eye apprehension of the natural world might be described as psychedelic. If youre attracted to pure, exquisitely photographed cinematic depictions of the world, you could almost lie down in Hukkle as if it were a meadow and soak in its sun-drenched atmosphere. The film has hardly any spoken words, and except for a scene of a church chorus, the sounds humans make are treated as another manifestation of environmental noise on a teeming soundtrack. That soundtrack is a kind of pastoral symphony that lends the hum of the rural outdoors (with indoor sidetracks to a country kitchen and a sewing factory) a layered richness that seems three-dimensional..
