Bringing Dinos Back to Life
WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU seeing when a triceratops or a velociraptor appears on screen in Jurassic Park? For close-ups, the film makers often used full-size robots by the model-maker Stan Winston. When the dinosaurs are in motion, however, viewers will probably be looking at computer animation. The animation took place at Industrial Light and Magic, the California special-effects house. The company, which has also handled special effects for The Abyss and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, used the dinosaur robots designed by Mr. Winston (such as the seven-foot velociraptors pictured here) as guides. The animation alone took 18 months. Meanwhile, other technicians blocked out the actions of the invisible dinosaurs on the movie set.

Its Risky Crashing a Raptor Convention
Do you remember the sounds they made? Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) asks a colleague in an awe-inspired whisper in Jurassic Park 3, the cruel-to-be-kind sequel thats a lot more fun than the previous Park excursions. Grant is talking about raptors, and given the miraculous season the Toronto Raptors had in the N.B.A., that could be what he is marveling about. But Grant is referring to the quick, fierce prehistoric creatures better known as velociraptors. He has learned that the raptors can speak and communicate, and adds, They were smarter than primates. The animals are indeed smart: they were bright enough to turn down much of the dialogue that the human actors have to speak. The beasts dont have to voice lines like Grants No force on Earth or Heaven will get me back on that island. Nor will the raptors -- or their new reptilian co-stars, the equally deadly spinosauruses and the pteranodons (who look like more capable relatives of pterodactyls) -- have to deal with passages like the inevitable Whats it gonna take? response from the gee-whiz benefactor Paul Kirby (William H. Macy), who whips out a checkbook to persuade Grant to join the expedition.. Elvis Mitchell reviews Joe Johnston movie Jurassic Park 3; photo (M)
When Making Dinosaurs Scary, Less Becomes More
Is Jurassic Park a horror movie? Screaming audiences seem to cry yes! But people love to scream on roller coasters, too, and no one thinks of that experience as horror. Steven Spielbergs multimillion-dollar special-effects extravaganza has a roller coasters jerking, jolting pace, and its almost as noisy as the Coney Island Cyclone. Yet Jurassic Park also tries to be horrific, not by beefing up dinosaurs but by shrinking them. Since the earliest discovery of saurian fossils more than 150 years ago, millions of people have been intrigued, fascinated, even struck with awe by dinosaurs; but until now few have found them horrible. Traditionally dinosaurs have inspired awe or affection rather than fear. PBSs much-maligned Barney proves that small children would cuddle dinosaurs if they could, and Barney is far from the first cuddly dinosaur (the Flintstones had one for a pet, and decades before Dino came Windsor McKays comic-strip Gertie and Sinclair Oils jolly green brontosaur).

Review/Film; Screen Stars With Teeth To Spare
STEVEN SPIELBERGS Jurassic Park is a true movie milestone, presenting awe- and fear-inspiring sights never before seen on the screen. The more spectacular of these involve the fierce, lifelike dinosaurs that stalk through the film with astounding ease. Much scarier, however, are those aspects of Jurassic Park that establish it as the overnight flagship of a brand-new entertainment empire. Even while capturing the imagination of its audience, this film lays the groundwork for the theme-park rides, sequels and souvenirs that insure the Jurassic Park experience will live on. And on. And on. The timing of this cinematic marketing coup could not be better, since an entire generation of children has fallen in love with dinosaurs, transforming the fossils of yesteryear into the totems of today. On the other hand, Jurassic Park has its planning problems, since this PG-13-rated film is clearly too frightening for the young viewers who could have best appreciated its magic, and who will most easily be drawn in by its marketing arm. Parents and guardians, take note: children who think of Tyrannosaurus rex as a huge hunk of friendly, prehistoric exotica will not want to see a T. rex bite a lawyer in half.

Should We Revive the Dinosaurs?
Much as we hate to be drawn into the frenzied hype for Steven Spielbergs Jurassic Park, it is hard to ignore a megabuck movie that has already become grist for museum displays, op-ed commentary, Nightline and lively debate among scientists. The films central notion -- that arrogant, unscrupulous or unthinking scientists might bring long-extinct dinosaurs back to life -- has clearly struck a chord. The faint of heart may rest assured that even the maddest of scientists will not have the capability any time soon of resurrecting the dinosaurs. The movie, like Michael Crichtons book on which it was based, hypothesizes that blood-sucking mosquitoes dined on the dinos, and immediately afterward got stuck in tree resin that later hardened to amber, preserving the mosquitoes and the dinosaur blood for tens of millions of years. Modern scientists are then able, in the movie, to extract the blood from the amber, isolate a fragment of dinosaur DNA, stick it into an egg, and presto -- out comes a new dinosaur.

Editorial Notebook; The Instant T. Rex
The blockbuster movie this summer is a freak of cultural evolution. It has a tiny brain but boasts an enormous body that feeds on computer-generated special effects. Entertainment is antithetical to reality.

Horror Stories
You may already have forgotten The Great Pepsi Scare of 1993. It raged out of control for less than a week, though it did leave whole states and several major news organizations terrorized in its wake. The facts, if they can be called that, were these. On June 10, an elderly Tacoma, Wash., couple, Earl (Tex) and Mary Triplett, said a syringe had turned up in their can of Diet Pepsi. Within days, dozens of other syringe sightings were reported by Pepsi drinkers -- the very health-conscious drinkers of Diet Pepsi in particular -- in 23 states. Soon all three network evening news programs led with the crisis. Jay Lenos monologue likened President Clintons inoculation program to the Pepsi challenge while Ted Koppel countered with a Pepsi Nightline. A big-eyed 9-year-old boy in the Bronx who said his gum had been pricked by a hypodermic needle posed with the accused Pepsi bottle in The New York Post. USA Today published a front-page map showing the tainted Pepsi states in red, should readers wish to reroute their vacations.

No new publication date has been set. In a statement put out by Knopf, Ms. Winfrey said her recent appearance at the American Booksellers Association convention in Miami, in which she generated waves of adoration from booksellers wherever she went, had caused her to reconsider the project.
