Review/Theater: Tis Puty Shes A Whore; Jacobean Tale of Lust and Revenge Updated to the Fascist 1930s
If you were trying to assemble the most invigorating production of a classic to be seen in New York City this season, would you mix the following elements? An infrequently produced Jacobean revenge tragedy that ends with its hero ripping out the heroines heart and carrying it aloft on a skewer. (Enter Giovanni with a heart upon his dagger, reads the Grand Guignol stage direction.) A pair of young lead actors better known for their Hollywood roles in lubricious movies like The Doors and Basic Instinct than for their experience in speaking verse. A severely intellectual director whose previous encounters with another 17th-century author, Shakespeare, have been her least successful projects. A set designer, most recently of the Metropolitan Operas Ghosts of Versailles, who regards a classical text as an occasion for practicing the modern arts of deconstruction and collage.

TV: TIS THE SEASON FOR CHILDRENS SPECIALS
TELEVISIONS Christmas season is churning into full gear, and the electronic halls are decked with specials. Some are well-worn reruns, now referred to as classics. Others feature a singer such as Johnny Cash or Perry Como offering traditional music. And then there is an assortment of animations and made-for-television movies specifically pegged to the holidays. Let the viewer beware. A degree of selectivity is essential. Tonight at 7:30, WCBS-TV is pre-empting its weekly Magazine for a half-hour Canadian import called The Christmas Raccoons. Two years in production, the program is said to have cost more than $800,000. Animation, obviously, is expensive. The producer is Kevin Gillis, who is also a songwriter and is associated with two successful childrens programs in Canada.

TIS THE SEASON
Last Christmas the whole family gathered in Morrisonville. We are a family that likes to gather at Christmas and Wally - hes the little boy - wanted us all to gather at his place, which is down there in Virginia surrounded by deep mud. In some places it snows at Christmas; in Morrisonville it muds. When I told Andy - hes the big boy - we would gather at Wallys, he got his back up and said he wasnt going to gather any place where you sat by the yule log on Christmas Eve to watch mudflakes blowing against the windowpane, but he finally came around, and bought some boots and came on down.

Tis the Season
Much as I love A Christmas Carol, I dont believe Charles Dickens really did justice to the nature of his hero, Ebenezer Scrooge. If Dickens hadnt been such a sucker for personal redemption, he might have let us see how perceptive the old Scrooge really was -- the one who savors all the ironies of Christmas. How else, after a night of ghostly trauma, could he have remembered there were two prize turkeys in the poulterers window at the corner in the next street but one? I always imagine Scrooge into existence for a little while about now, not because I dislike Christmas -- I dont -- but because the old Scrooge is as much a part of it as the new one. Where do you keep your young the rest of the year? I can hear him saying while he waits for the No. 1 train at Times Square. And, indeed, the platform is filled with children who seem to be knotted together, mitten to mitten. Have you never heard of shopping online? he shouts on the street after being banged in the knee yet again by a heavy shopping bag. Why dont you go home and let some air out? he mutters in a crowded supermarket aisle, where it looks as if everyone, swaddled in winter gear, is inflated to maximum pressure.. Verlyn Klinkenborg The City Life column discusses Charles Dickenss character Ebenezer Scrooge, and says it is surprising there is so little Scrooge-like behavior in New York City during Christmas season (M)

ON AREA STAGES, TIS THE SEASON TO BE DICKENSIAN
COME December, no show proliferates as predictably as A Christmas Carol. In 1936, John Barrymore was heard on the radio as the quintessential curmudgeon, Ebenezer Scrooge. In 1979, Henry Winkler played the part on television. While the 140-year-old Charles Dickens novel is clearly meant for all media, it isnt a classic for all seasons. Three years ago, a black musical version, called Comin Uptown, opened on Broadway in December, tried to run through January - and failed. Starting this week, one can choose Christmas Carol productions, in all shapes and styles - from elementary schools to universities, in community centers and in theaters of varying sizes. Virtually every regional theater has A Christmas Carol to call its own. For contrast, attention should be paid to two local professional stagings. In her directorial debut, Nancy Hall Bell, producing director of the Greeley Street Theater, is opting for an improvisational approach. Her production began performances last Thursday at the Chappaqua Library Theater. On Friday night, the Hartman Theater in Stamford, Conn., will present a more conventional staging, albeit a full-scale musical one, with a score by Michel Legrand and a book and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.
