TV: BBC SHAKESPEARE SERIES TURNS TO MACBETH
GOING into its final seasons a bit behind schedule because of the usual money problems that afflict the arts internationally on television, the mammoth BBC project devoted to The Shakespeare Plays, all 37 of them, has finally come around to Macbeth. On WNET/Channel 13 at 8 this evening, the handsomely lean and compelling production stars Nichol Williamson and Jane Lapotaire. The director is Jack Gold, whose drama credits for television include The Merchant of Venice in this series and The Naked Civil Servant. He also did the spy thriller Charlie Muffin, seen here on public television last week. In addition, he has worked on a great many documentaries, their subjects ranging from J. Paul Getty and Baroness Thyssen to Hollywood and Wall Street. His Macbeth has the uncluttered directness of a first-rate documentary. No time is wasted on unnecessary frills or bombastic interpretations. The scenes roll by rapidly, separated only by brief blackouts. Macbeths ghosts remain trapped in his head, seen by the viewer as only empty chairs at the banquet.

With Vesuvius Rumbling, Romans Still Behave Badly
How much does television hate the Romans? Even in a would-be eulogy tomorrow on the Discovery Channel, they come across as typically lascivious and arrogant. Pompeii: The Last Day, a BBC production, features a re-creation of Aug. 24, A.D. 79, the day Mount Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii. You might expect some last-minute tenderness here, but even in their dying hours -- just as theyre about to have their soft tissue vaporized and their brains boiled -- these Romans are still presented as jerks. First off, they clean their clothes in urine. The acid takes out grease stains, apparently. Second, they have slaves. In one dramatization here, a married businessman has sex with a slave in a cheap hotel on his last day, while his wife tries to steal his money. In another, a pompous politician insists, pigheadedly, that his house is strong enough to weather the volcano. In the meantime, gladiators strut around, tempting fate. Everybody loots.. London Journal; Rounding Up a BBC Audience, With Sheep Dogs
Admittedly, it is not likely to make anyones blood surge wildly with excitement. But the BBC is waiting to see whether millions of Britons will spend Monday evening watching a special edition of One Man and His Dog, a show in which a bunch of sheep running in the wrong direction qualifies as high drama. And why, exactly, would anybody want to watch this program?. BBC-TVs 23-year-old contest show, One Man and His Dog, which shows shepherds trying to corral sheep into their pens, is given reprieve after station threatened to cancel it in belief that 23-year-old programs quaint pace is out of sync with racier image it wants to project; station will air special edition following howls of public protest and will bring it back, at least from time to time, if ratings for special broadcast are good; photo (M)
