Yes, billions. Interestingly enough, the Bush administration, known to be opposed to frivolous lawsuits and in favor of tort reform, has weighed in on the side of the industry. He looks like a bare-chested imp, visible through a blizzard of snowflakes. His face, framed by a blond mop, registers a veritable compendium of emotions. He turns his naked torso to the right while the opening credits roll and theme music plays. Is he declaiming or acting or singing? We cant tell, because hes soundless. And this is just the opening title sequence, shot long ago, now seen in nostalgic black and white. When we see him again, moments later, Skip E. Lowe is decades older, in as much color as public-access cameras can convey. His hair, now a yellowish gray, is combed back across his head and behind his ears. His face is crisscrossed by so many lines it could be copyrighted by Rand McNally. We hear him talking, in a voice that occupies the niche between wheedle and whine, about some sub-People celebrity -- Red Buttons or Shecky Greene or an actress of a certain age -- recounting some of the highlights of his or her career with a mixture of admiration and delight. The background, devoid of furnishing or art direction, is pure black, blacker than Charlie Roses nightmares. And then, as if by magic, said celebrity appears, sitting next to Lowe, sharing the blackness, and for the next half-hour Hollywood is fabulous again.. IT is no secret that the Internet offers a wealth of information. Its even known that much of what we used to call intelligence is freely available online. I decided to find out what I could learn about myself just by consulting Internet-based resources. First, I needed to pinpoint where I was. Satellite photos, once exclusive to military intelligence, are commercially available online, with the pictures resolving to a startling level of detail. But, frankly, theyre expensive. Rather than shell out good money to see where I live, I gave my address to a mapping service, which responded in seconds, free, with a street-by-street set of instructions explaining exactly how to get lost trying to arrive at my residence.
