THE DARKER BROTHER

THE LIFE OF LANGSTON HUGHES Volume One: 1902-1941. I, Too, Sing America. By Arnold Rampersad. Illustrated. 468 pp. New York: Oxford University Press. $22.95. WHAT was Langston Hughes? An overwhelmer. Long ago I felt it was proper to say he had a long reach / strong speech / remedial fears / muscular tears. I gave him titles: Helmsman, hatchet, headlight. And I suggested: See / one restless in the exotic time! and ever, / till the air is cured of its fever. Well, the time is still exotic. The air is not cured of its fever. Hughes is not here to be restless, but his product is here, still restless and capable of quite an agitation, a continuing agitation. Schoolchildren, elders, laborers, maids, doctors, nurses, filing clerks, miners, computer dabblers, salespeople at Macys and Marshall Fields have heard of Langston Hughes and his compulsions - and many can quote from his poetry. An increasing number of scholars and textbook builders find him interesting to study.

The Many Moods (and Levels) of Langston Hughes

THE COLLECTED POEMS OF LANGSTON HUGHES Edited by Arnold Rampersad and David Roessel 708 pages. Alfred A. Knopf. $30. What would American art do without the Midwest, so averse to artifice or embellishment in its manners and morals? From Willa Cather (born in 1873) to Langston Hughes (born in 1902), and with Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Marianne Moore and T. S. Eliot in between, our Midwest produced writers who transformed the stern and plain into the rich and strange. They were looking for the route that ties the spare to the ecstatic, and reserve to passionate intensity.

Crime and Comeuppance With a Sassy, Jazzy Heart

Just when all that seems left in the holiday theater stocking are lumps of coal, there, stuffed deep in the toe (actually the Hudson Guild Theater), is a nearly overlooked gift: Little Ham, a jazzy musical bauble with nothing to recommend it but fine songs, a cast with sass and charm and an attractive, modest production that is too modest for the material. This is one show that a little lavish pizazz, the kind that costs a lot, wouldnt hurt at all. It deserves the celebratory noise of a few bells and whistles. The musical, which has been in intermittent development since 1985, is drawn from, if not exactly based on, the play of the same name by Langston Hughes. A comedy written in 1936 and set in the late 1920s, the play was both fond and biting, a portrait of a Harlem neighborhood in the thrall of the numbers racket.. BOOKS OF THE TIMES

THE LIFE OF LANGSTON HUGHES. Vol. I: 1902-1941. I, Too, Sing America. By Arnold Rampersad. 468 pages. Illustrated. Oxford. $22.95. LANGSTON HUGHES was only 21 when he wrote the poem that first made him famous, The Weary Blues. More than two years passed before he was ready to show it to the world; then, in 1925, he submitted it as one of his entries for a competition for black writers, a widely-noted affair (the judges included Eugene ONeill and Alexander Woolcott) culminating in a banquet at the Fifth Avenue Restaurant, where it was announced that The Weary Blues had won first prize in the poetry section. After the announcement, the poem was recited - magnificently, according to Arnold Rampersad in his new biography of Hughes - by the writer James Weldon Johnson: Down on Lenox Avenue the other night By the pale dull pallor of an old gas light It must have been a very powerful moment.
