The Mile Is a Mockery
ONE opinion that has been held here too long to be lightly dismissed is that if God had intended man to run He would have given him four legs, or at least made him late for a bus. To be sure, speed afoot might have been useful to some of the young ladies pursued by Jack the Ripper, but unnecessary running is a crime against nature. This goes for the joggers who clutter our country roads and infest our parks, and young men like Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett who perform publicly in their underwear. By breaking the world record every few days, those two Limeys are making a mockery of the mile race, which has been traditionally the core and kernel of any track meet. Mention the Millrose Games, and the discussion automatically turns to the Wanamaker Mile; as early as the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, the 1,500 meters was described by the French sporting paper, LEquipe, as the bombe atomique of the Games.
Portrait of a Winner
THE phone call came from Laurel Race Course in Maryland: Did you ever hear of a jockey named Nick Shuk? The answer was easy. I remember his father. Wasnt he prominent in the Preakness one year, maybe Nashuas Preakness? Yes, Joe Kelly said, but that was Nick, not his father. Nick is 51 and still riding, and winning, and battling cancer. They celebrated Nick Shuk Day at Laurel last week, calling the feature the Nick Shuk Purse and naming the other races for horses that meant something special in his career -Pilaster, Little Harp, Sailor, Tuscany, Brazen Brat, Damascus, Saratoga and Sunglow. Little Harp, owned by the Pittsburgh Steelers proprietor, Art Rooney, was Shuks first winner, in 1948, when Nick was apprenticed to Rooneys Shamrock Farm. Rooney gave Nick a watch on that occasion and, assuming the boy was Irish, had it engraved Keep the faith. The Shuks trace back to Russia, but Nick still has the watch, along with a new one. Art Rooney was one of many friends who attended Nick Shuk Day. He went back to Pittsburgh with a plaque that Shuk had carved from redwood, three horseshoes arranged like a shamrock.

The Millions $1,100 Baby
FLANKED by two mounted cops, Mayor Jane Byrne of Chicago rode a horse in a parade the other day, which may not tell us a lot about politics in the second city but does suggest that the town is in a tizzy over the upcoming Arlington Million, Americas richest race for thoroughbreds. Somewhat more significant, as far as the race is concerned, was yesterdays arrival of the gallant gelding, John Henry, who could be the star of the piece. He flew in from Del Mar after having broken every stopwatch in Southern California. With Bill Shoemaker in the saddle, John Henry had worked a mile in 1:34 2/5 and had finished out a mile and an eighth in 1:46 3/5.

1981-II*
AS expected, major league baseball has decided to go bush and adopt the Shaughnessy playoff system, which has been a fixture in the minors for years and years. It figured, and if the split season invites some genteel cheating and refined goldbricking, the men who voted for it will blame the players. If theyre still playing the World Series Oct. 28 or even into November and Bowie Kuhn catches pneumonia in spite of his thermal underwear, who will the commissioner blame? Munsingwear? The Shaughnessy playoff was conceived by Shag Shaughnessy when that slightly reformed outfielder was president of the International League. It was, he said, insurance against a lopsided pennant race.

A Dwindling Breed of Sports Fan
WHENEVER a strike shut down newspapers in New York, thousands of readers were lost. Some circulation was regained slowly, but many former subscribers continued along their uninformed way, settling for the superficial headline service of the news broadcasts. In 1957, the last year New York had three major league baseball teams, the Yankees, Giants and Dodgers drew a total of 3,178,313 customers. The following season , when the Yankees had the whole market to themselves, attendance in the Stadium was 1,428,438. Over one winter 1,750,075 fans got lost in a single city. There are teams that never drew that many in a season.

Fun and Games, Somewhat Tarnished, at Southern Cal
CHANCES are a little bit of cheating goes on in intercollegiate athletics at most universities. If this leaves some slightly soiled hands, then recent disclosures at the University of Southern California make a pigsty of that culture foundry. The new president of the university has revealed that 330 academically deficient athletes were enrolled by the athletic department over the last 10 years with the collusion of the former president. The corruption touched all sports but most of the unqualified students were football players. The average number seems to have been 33 a year. Like other members of the Pac-10 Conference, U.S.C. is allowed 30 football scholarships a year.

A Tale of Two Third Basemen
PHILADELPHIA ON Oct. 3, 1951, Bobby Thomson hit The Home Run, and the game will always be remembered for that. It was the third and last match in the pennant playoff between the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers. In the last of the ninth inning, Brooklyn led, 4-2, with one out and two Giants on base. Then Thomson hit a baseball into the seats beyond left field and got it all for the Giants in one piece, 5-4. It will always be Bobby Thomsons game, yet it could have been described as the story of two third basemen. Billy Cox of the Dodgers was Brooks Robinson, Clete Boyer and Pie Traynor rolled into one that day. Everything the Giants hit toward his side of the infield became an out in his sure hands.
Perry Mason At the Races
BALTIMORE IF the term media event werent in the language already, we should have to get a Latin to invent it to describe what went on yesterday in the third-floor dining room of the Pimlico clubhouse. The Maryland Racing Commission was hearing the appeal of Bert and Diana Firestone on the decision of the Pimlico stewards, who on May 17 ruled that the Firestones filly, Genuine Risk, had not been fouled in the 105th Preakness Stakes. Usually these affairs are just part of the racing routine, like a baseball managers protest of an umpires call. The hearing is conducted in an office, and the commissioners decide, with no great sweat, whether to uphold or reverse the judgment of their appointed judges. Much more often than not, the stewards are upheld.
SPORTS OF THE TIMES ARKANSAS TRAVELER ON THE BIG APPLE
IN the paddock they cheered Genuine Risk and booed Angel Cordero and Codex, the pair that had done her wrong. As they walked into the starting gate, the filly was cheered and the colt booed. Two and a half minutes later, 58,090 immortal souls at Belmont Park fell silent, mouths agape. A 53-to-1 shot called Temperence Hill - a winner of the Arkansas Derby, no less, who was named for a Methodist church - had swept home in the 112th Belmont Stakes for a mutuel payoff of $108.80 for $2. John E. Anthony, an Arkansas lumberman, put up $20,000 to make Temperence Hill a supplementary starter and collected a purse of $176,220. If he had bet $20,000 in Las Vegas he would have made a million.

Biggest Event of 81: Alis Retirement
WHAT was the biggest single sports event in 1981? The baseball strike comes to mind immediately, along with a variety of repercussions, including the split season and immoral pennant races, especially if the end result is the departure of Bowie Kuhn as commissioner. The improvement of the football Giants and Jets - if it is improvement and not just the effect of Pete Rozelles parity scheduling - has had New York in a tizzy for weeks. There was plenty to captivate racing people - John Henrys charge through the $3 million mark, the springtime of Pleasant Colony and John Campo, Before Dawns irresistible way with fillies. Overriding all others, though, was an event that would have commanded attention any other year in the last 20. It was the retirement of Muhammad Ali, when the last cowbell concluded a sleazy production in a decaying ball park in the Bahamas.

The Boxing Jungle, Houston Version
HOUSTON THERE were fist fights in the Astrodome, a lot of them, and some were lively but not necessarily more entertaining than the fighting outside the ring. In one corner, wearing red trunks out of respect for the financial bath he expected as promoter of the fisticuffs, was Bob Arum, head of the promotional firm of Top Rank Inc.; in the other was Mike Trainer, the lawyer who handles the affairs of Sugar Ray Leonard. He wore the expression of a man sorely put upon. The opening bell rang April 27, two days after Thomas Hearns, recognized as the welterweight champion by the World Boxing Association, stopped Randy Shields in Phoenix, Ariz. A press conference was called in Houston to announce last nights card, on which Leonard would challenge Ayub Kalule for the W.B.A. junior middleweight title (154 pounds) and Hearns would defend his halfchampionship against Pablo Diaz of the Dominican Republic.
Again the Cy Young Award
hitter, broke the league record in that respect. (With five one-hitters, he had been in illustrious company, tied with Three Finger Brown, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Jim Maloney, Tom Seaver and Don Sutton. Bob Feller pitched 12 one-hitters in the American League, an unreasonable figure.) It was a foregone conclusion that Carlton would win his third Cy Young Award. It is by no means certain that he will pick it up. The fact that a jury of baseball reporters bestowed the prize on a player who goes out of his way to be rude to baseball reporters and uncooperative with them does not necessarily prove the jurors magnanimous, tolerant and fair-minded. After months of campaign oratory, they may have welcomed the opportunity to vote for a candidate who doesnt speak to them.

The Fight That Nobody Won
DURING negotiations on the baseball strike, Murray Chass reported in The New York Times that there was talk of a swap. Owners would grant the players full credit for time lost during the strike if the players would agree to an extension of the basic agreement, then due to expire Dec. 31, 1983. Ray Grebey, the one and only spokesman for the owners Player Relations Committee Inc., was asked to comment on the report in todays Times. It is an unreliable report, he said, by an unreliable reporter on an unreliable paper. When a strike settlement was announced at 6:05 A.M. Friday, it included a swap - full credit for lost time in exchange for a oneyear extension of the basic agreement.
