Baghdad, 2003
The air-raid sirens were followed 10 minutes later by antiaircraft batteries firing and by the strikes. By evening the second round of bombing came, and we had everything ready. We had the BBC on the shortwave. My friend Thorne, a photographer, had gotten the generator working. We had taped the windows with Xs and filled the tub with water. With only one flak jacket and one helmet among three of us -- me, Thorne and his girlfriend, Kael -- we had decided that it would be used by anybody going out on the balcony. But as soon as the sirens sounded we all ran out and ducked down. Below, taxis peeled out of the parking lot and men ran across the street into the Sheraton. A lone white dog loped down the road along the river. When the antiaircraft started, he ran back the other way. Car alarms started sounding. We saw the missiles hit across the river. There was an orange explosion that seemed to come from inside out followed by a mass of dark gray smoke that hung above for a while before drifting down the Tigris. The antiaircraft ack-ack-ack is surprisingly loud, a low booming thud and then fireworks crackling in the sky, as silver flashes of the exploding flak glitter and then fall away. Occasionally, red-orange tracers streaked upward. But the lights of the city were bright, giving it a yellow glow, so everything seemed to return to normal as soon as the firing stopped. After half an hour, you could smell the burning plastic from the fire. We were expecting shock and awe, but that would not come for another day. These strikes seemed to fade and then disappear.. Kosovo, 1999
We Albanians had begun to lose our patience. On the ground, there was hell, so we looked to the sky for rescue. For bombs, for hope. For NATO. Meanwhile, the shops were almost empty. At the bus stop, women, children and elderly people were preparing to flee Kosovo. After dusk, it was not safe for us to be on the street, and so on the evening of March 24, 1999, I was locked in my apartment in Pristina. I was alone. My sons were abroad, and my husband was in a bus station in Belgrade. I was scared; my blood pressure was climbing. I lay down to rest.. Cambodia, 1970
I was 28 years old in 1970, working as a journalist in the city of Siem Reap, in northwest Cambodia. When the war started in Vietnam, we could hear all kinds of bombardment. I had heard B-52s from far away, which would shake all the doors and the houses like thunder. When the war started in Cambodia, everybody had to join and help the military. We were told to make trenches. We stayed inside the city. The first time we heard the planes above us, everybody thought that maybe they came from the airport.. Vietnam, 1966
This was in the central highlands of South Vietnam, June 6, 1966 -- 6-6-6-6, the Devils numbers, plus one to add to the confusion. I didnt think of that until years later, numerology recollected in tranquillity. The bombardment was not the enemies (they did not have heavy artillery in 1966) but our own, 1,200 rounds of artillery in a little over three hours, concentrated on the perimeter of a piece of mountain jungle not much larger than a football field. Football fields are usually the measurement of choice, but another measurement could be one of those trophy houses in the Hamptons or Nantucket, if you included the swimming pool and the stables. In an article I wrote at the time, I called it an ambush, a term that irritated the Army. The Army preferred meeting engagement. So be it. In this meeting engagement, there were 42 Americans strung along a jungle trail and God knows how many North Vietnamese, perhaps 100, perhaps 200. No one could say for certain because they attacked violently, without warning, using rifles and machine guns and were rarely seen then or later because the vegetation was so thick. In the first hour, our casualties were heavy: six dead and a dozen wounded. This was a struggle of fire and maneuver, and their idea was to surround us and close like a fist around a mosquito. They had the people to do it and do it fairly quickly, so the commander of our reconnaissance team radioed to base and requested artillery fire. Break the bones of the fist without crushing the mosquito inside, meaning that the artillery would be walked in from the perimeter, where the enemy was, to the center, where we were -- a steadily tightening noose of fire so lethal that the enemy would give in. The North Vietnamese had two choices: retreat or belly up so close to the mosquito that the artillery risked killing everyone, fist and mosquito alike. Very brave soldiers, these North Vietnamese: they chose the latter.. Series of observations from different wars that describe bombings viewed from ground; Ward Just described bombings in central highlands of Vietnam in 1966; photo (M)

Britain, 1940-44
My wifes father commanded an American bomber squadron on the Western Front in World War I. His de Havilland aircraft were called tomato crates. They had open cockpits, and their maximum speed was just 90 miles an hour. Their targets were exclusively military. Only 7 of the original 40 members of his squadron survived the war. The first public controversy that I can remember was the uproar in England in the late 1920s over the R.A.F. bombing of rebellious tribesmen on the Northwest Frontier in India. (There had been a lively debate in the 1920s about outlawing aerial bombardment altogether.) In the 1930s the most famous atrocity of the Spanish Civil War was the Nazi bombing of Guernica. By 1939, aerial bombing, even of cities, was an accepted feature of war..
