I HAD A FARM IN AFRICA, AT THE foot of the Ngong Hills - that famous opening sentence of Isak Dinesens Out of Africa has daunted some of the most enterprising of modern film makers. Orson Welles, who made an hourlong film of Dinesens The Immortal Story, never realized his hopes of adapting her classic African memoir. Nor did David Leans thoughts of filming the book ever materialize. In the early 1970s, Nicolas Roeg thought of directing a film with Julie Christie as the Danish-born author and Ryan ONeal as the Swedish Baron whom she married. But if the book, which Dinesens biographer Judith Thurman has called a landscape from the air, has a keen sense of character and place that have made it alluring from the film makers standpoint, it also has an uneventfulness that has kept it well out of reach. So it eluded them all.

IT WAS A TYPICAL HOLLYWOOD plot. The screenplay for a murder mystery called The Morning After was offered a few years ago to Tri-Star Pictures, which showed it to Jane Fonda. She was interested, but the script needed work. Tri-Star put the property into turnaround, meaning it offered the screenplay for sale. Warner Brothers bought it and Mark H. Rosenberg, then president of production at that studio, assigned it to another writer for revisions. Still there were problems. It needed narrative work and some character development, Rosenberg recalls. The executive and the actress then approached a third writer, David Rayfiel. We thought that if anybody could make it work, it would be David, says Rosenberg, who is now with another film company, Mirage Productions. Tomorrow, shooting on The Morning After is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles. It is being made by Lorimar Telepictures, which bought it from Warner, and the stars are Jane Fonda, Jeff Bridges and Raul Julia. Sidney Lumet, on the strength of Rayfiels revisions, is directing.
