Fun Takes the Reins At a Dude Ranch

IT does not take a wrangler to raise a child, but a wrangler could very well be the answer to vexed parents who want that child to join them in that most slow-paced of sports: gazing at the leaves that will begin to turn candy colors later this month. In terms of tortures perpetrated on children by well-meaning moms and dads, family leaf-watching jaunts are tops on the list for the preteenage set, to say nothing of teenagers, with 1,237,463 separate reasons why such trips are boring and dumb. Well just touch upon the top two, then quickly jump to a local solution. Most children can concentrate on a leaf, even a blowing one, for a grand total of six minutes, and that includes a break for snack. And when one thinks of hikes through leafy, hilly woods, places like Vermont or the Berkshires come to mind, which are both quite a car ride (read: term of captivity) for a Westchester child not exactly waiting with baited breath to see his first bit of orange flutter to the forest floor.. Peekskill to UConn; Whats Next?

WHAT is Hilton Armstrong, a 6-foot-11-inch University of Connecticut senior from Peekskill, to do after his last semester? He is blooming late into a force on the basketball court, so the question has become more complex than it is for your typical student heading to business school or a job with the family firm. Armstrong was recruited from Peekskill High School, so the obvious parallel, at first, was to Elton Brand, another Peekskill graduate who went on to play big-time college basketball. But the arc of Brands career was more clear-cut and spectacular.

Fastest Marathoner Trains Locally

HE is a familiar sight among the dozens of daily joggers on the trails of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Sleepy Hollow, a slight figure moving faster and going farther than most. Some nod to him, some wave and some just attend to their own running. Very few realize they have just crossed strides with the fastest marathon runner in the history of the demanding sport. It is the perfect place to train, just five miles from my home, Khalid Khannouchi of Ossining said. I am there almost every day. I train 320 or more days a year, 110 or 120 miles a week.. York Papers Seek to Join

LEAD: The York Dispatch and The York Daily Record announced Wednesday that they are asking for a joint operating agreement that would unite the business and production functions of the newspapers.

Reporter Plans To Appeal Ruling

A reporter for The Morristown Daily Record said today that she would appeal a Municipal Court judges verdict that she was guilty of impersonating a government official while conducting an interview for a newspaper story. The reporter, Carla Cantor, was accused of telling a murder victims mother in Kenilworth that she was a county morgue official to persuade her to give intimate details about her daughter, who was found stabbed to death in Mountain Lakes on July 28, 1983.

REPORTER VERDICT OVERTURNED

A New Jersey judge has overturned the conviction of a reporter found guilty of impersonating a morgue attendant to interview the family of a murder victim. The judge, Edward W. McGrath of Superior Court in Elizabeth, said he had upset the conviction because the attorney for the family failed to disclose during the trial that a civil suit for damages would be filed.

JERSEY REPORTER ALLOWED RETRIAL

A newspaper reporter who has been tried twice on a charge of impersonating a government official is entitled to a new trial based on an order entered in Superior Court here today. The order by Judge Burton J. Ironson reversed a ruling by a lower court that denied the reporter access to a lawyers papers in the case. In an appeal after her first trial, the reporter, Carla Kantor, had won reversal of a conviction on the charge that she impersonated a county morgue official to obtain information from the mother of a murdered woman.

Engineers Faulted on Signals

New Jersey Transit engineers have run their trains through red lights four times this year, the most since 1993, with three of the incidents occurring in a 15-day stretch in September, the Record of Hackensack reported. Two of the four signal violations involved passenger trains, and the others occurred with work trains or empty trains, the newspaper said, citing agency records. All four incidents involved slow-moving trains, and no injuries resulted. Three engineers involved in the incidents were dismissed, with a fourth man suspended for 30 days..
