Forty years after the first James Bond film, Dr. No, was released, the series has outlived many of the preoccupations that fueled it: the cold war, the space race, the sexual revolution and the British Empire. JAMES BOND: The Legacy (Abrams, $49.95), by John Cork and Bruce Scivally, is unabashedly a fans compendium, making little critical distinction between the brilliant (From Russia With Love) and the bland (A View to a Kill, Roger Moores last outing as 007 in 1985). Much of the material is hardly top secret, but there are some delightful tidbits, like a panel from the 1957 newspaper comic strip said to have influenced the casting of Sean Connery, and a photograph of an impossibly lanky Connery with Noel Coward on location for Dr. No. The book does give a face to otherwise interchangeable directors like Guy Hamilton and John Glen, but is also cluttered with filler. The authors are more concerned with plot synopses and box office than with analyzing how the franchise endured five incarnations of actors and nearly two dozen feature films. Having long ago used up Ian Flemings original stories, the movie titles now seem to reflect the filmmakers hopes for the series, like Die Another Day, with Halle Berry. Newer series like The Matrix and XXX, with the gravel-voiced Vin Diesel, have raised the action stakes so high that Bond should be reaching for his Geritol, but the formula of girls, guns, gadgets and evil geniuses churns along as steadily as a vintage Bentley. AN interesting fact about Peter Pan, the play by James M. Barrie, now approaching its centenary, is that Captain Hook was an afterthought. According to Andrew Birkin, author of J. M. Barrie and the Lost Boys, it was only due to the prosaic necessity of a front-cloth scene to give the stagehands time to change the scenery. that Hook was conceived at all. An interlude on a pirate ship was added and Hook (O man unfathomable, wrote his creator) was born. An expert dramatist like Barrie, already rich from a string of hit plays and books, knew his yarn needed a bad guy, but he thought he already had one: Peter himself. Birkin writes that among the over 700 notes for Peter Pan discovered in the 1980s was one reading P. a demon boy (villain of story). The first live-action film of Peter Pan comes out this Christmas, and a film about Barrie, J. M. Barries Neverland, starring Johnny Depp, will be released next year. There is Yale University Presss new edition of Birkins book -- an account of Barries friendship with the Llewelyn Davies family, whose five sons inspired the play -- and the Disney animated film, along with countless stage productions, professional and otherwise. But perhaps the most eccentric version of Peters story is the novel Barrie wrote based on the play, because its the most purely Barrie: melancholy, witty, tender, cruel, bossy, abject and enigmatic. Whimsy is the term his Edwardian contemporaries used to describe his work, but our current sense of that word is probably too toothless to nail it..
