EUROPEANS, BASED ON JAMES NOVEL
AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE is certainly one of public televisions more distinguished showcases for quality programming. And, predictably enough for public television, the series is not without financing problems. One device it has developed for survival is the financing of independent films already in production and needing more money for completion. American Playhouse then gets first television rights to the film after it is released theatrically. In this manner, the series has acquired such worthwhile films as Testament and, next week, El Norte. One danger is that the series will end up being more a movie house than a playhouse. Film will begin to overshadow television and, contrary to some theorists, there is a difference, however ill-defined. On a very basic level, for instance, Testament and Gone With the Wind are films; An Englishman Abroad and The Jewel in the Crown are television. All four might work on television but the last two would not take well to a movie house. It is precisely because of the difference that one wonders about tonights offering - at 9 oclock on WNET/Channel 13 - of The Europeans, a Merchant Ivory Production that was released theatrically in 1979, presumably without any aid from American Playhouse.
