Shake-Up on the Waterfront Its pretty late for changes like this, but On the Waterfront, the Budd Schulberg-Stan Silverman adaptation of the 1954 movie, replaced its director, Gordon Edelstein, with Adrian Hall this weekend. The reason, said someone associated with the play, was that Mr. Edelstein was not moving fast enough, and by last Saturday the show hadnt been blocked and the actors were still discussing their motivations. Terry Kinney, who was to play the waterfront-priest role that Karl Malden handled in the film, also left and was replaced by David Morse. The cast didnt seem too upset by the departures, the person associated with the play said, because they had been worried about how slowly rehearsals were going.

BROADWAY: ASHLEY JUDD BOWS OUT
A foot injury suffered in last Tuesday nights performance of Tennessee Williamss Cat on a Hot Tin Roof has forced Ashley Judd out of the Broadway production, casting doubt over the future of the revival at the Music Box Theater. The show, also starring Ned Beatty and Jason Patric, is to play three more weeks. Ms. Judd, one of the dramas major draws, will be replaced by her understudy, Kelly McAndrew. Discussing the shows future, a producer, Bill Kenwright, said, It is my intention to certainly perform this week and my hope that we can continue the run. Ms. Judd, who played the long-suffering wife, Maggie, tore a ligament in Act I in a scene that called for her to jump off a bed. Instead of landing on her feet, she fell awkwardly and tore a ligament. Citing great pain and discomfort, she left after the second act and was replaced by Ms. McAndrew in Act III. Ms. Judd missed the Wednesday matinee and Thursday evening performances, but against the advice of her doctors soldiered through all of the weekend performances except the Saturday matinee. Yesterday it was announced that Ms. Judd could not continue and would undergo surgery tomorrow. Cat received mixed reviews when it opened last October but achieved box-office success, earning around $500,000 a week for most of its run until the post-holiday slump, when the show, like many on Broadway, suffered a drop in sales. A MARVEL -- More than one actress found herself mismatched with -- or overmatched by -- an iconic role on Broadway this season. But in the New York Theater Workshop production of Ibsens Hedda Gabler, the Off Broadway mainstay Elizabeth Marvel gave a master class in how to reinvigorate an archetypal role. Ms. Marvel and her enterprising director, Ivo van Hove, re-imagined Ibsens famously dissatisfied heroine as a woman possessed by a free-floating anomie that had a sharp contemporary resonance. THOM PAIN (BASED ON NOTHING) -- Solo shows often seem to be the crabgrass of the theatrical garden, sprouting up underfoot in unwanted numbers. But Will Enos Thom Pain (based on nothing), a bleak but acidly funny meditation on the indelible sorrows of life, brought a new jolt of aesthetic energy to a nearly moribund genre. It also provided the quirky Off Broadway actor James Urbaniak with the role of his still-young career. (And, yes, I heard: lots of people hated it. Sue me.) ONE FOR ALL -- It was a strong season for seamless ensemble work on Broadway, with the casts of Glengarry Glen Ross and Twelve Angry Men earning significant accolades. But the exemplary cast of Austin Pendletons play Orsons Shadow, at the Barrow Street Theater, also Off Broadway, deserves special credit for its particular collective task: delineating the complex relationships among five celebrated figures of 20th-century theater -- Kenneth Tynan, Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier and his two actress wives, Vivien Leigh and Joan Plowright. SET UP -- Set design, as it is all too often practiced, is little more than interior decoration on a more amplified scale. But for two productions at New York Theater Workshop this season -- Ivo van Hoves Hedda Gabler and James Macdonalds staging of A Number by Caryl Churchill -- the auditorium itself was adventurously reconfigured, recalibrating the relationship between audience and actors in ways that brought an extra charge to the theatergoing experience. THE PLAY WITH MUSIC -- Terry Daviess original score for Matthew Bournes London-born dance drama Play Without Words, seen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this spring, was more flavorful, and satisfying, than almost all of the scores for new musicals seen on Broadway this season. Steeped in the sounds of 1960s jazz, it was an active participant in Mr. Bournes frisky tribute to the class unconsciousness of the sexual impulse.
