After Climbing So Many Mountains, a Ski Resort Giant Stumbles
IT was a bold strategy: Buy like mad, build like mad, pay for it with an initial stock offering and a lot of borrowed money, and pray that the snow -- and the customers -- would keep coming. For almost five years it was an exhilarating ride, as the American Skiing Company grew from a single Maine resort in 1994 to nine in New England and the Rockies. Hotels bought, condos built, new snow machines and gondolas installed: The company was pumping millions into its strategy of rapidly building itself into a giant in winter recreation.. Bad snow conditions in both New England and Rocky Mountains in first few months of 1998-99 ski season have hurt American Skiing Co, calling into question wisdom of its rapid expansion in weather-dependent industry; company is scrapping at least part of its aggressive building schedule to conserve cash and service big debt; photo (M)

Britain Is Reported to Have Decided Against Adopting the Euro
Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, often depicted as rivals for the future leadership of Britain, met today to debate whether this country should adopt the euro, inspiring news reports that a decision had been reached against adopting the single currency. If confirmed, the reports on BBC television tonight would represent a landmark decision by Mr. Blair -- long seen as a supporter of the euro -- to accept Mr. Browns assessment that the British economy is not ready for euro membership and thus postpone a decision to ask Britons to vote in a referendum on abandoning the cherished pound sterling.. BBC reports that Prime Min Tony Blair and Chancellor of Exchequer Gordon Brown have met and decided against adopting single euro currency; if report is true, it would represent landmark decision by Blair--long seen as supporter of euro--to accept Browns assessment that British economy is not ready for euro membership; decision to reject moves toward euro membership would dilute Britains claim to influence Continents future and underscores its reluctance to pay price of full membership in European club of nations; any decision on euro is likely to be driven by politics of Britains national identity, with pound sterling acting as icon of independence; Blairs office denies BBC report (M)

ARTS BRIEFING
HIGHLIGHTS FRENCH ARTS WORKERS STRIKE -- The opening of the Avignon theater festival fell victim yesterday to a wave of strikes across France by technicians, actors, dancers and filmmakers resisting efforts to reduce their unemployment benefits, news agencies report. In Paris volunteers and the police were called in to make sure that a Rolling Stones concert for 60,000 fans in a stadium tonight would go on as scheduled. The labor dispute has already forced cancellation of some festivals and the disruption of the opera gala in Aix-en-Provence. In the face of the walkouts, Frances culture minister, Jean-Jacques Aillagon, told France-Inter radio: Every time a festival is canceled, the fallout is appalling, and their futures are often compromised. I believe Ive gone to the limits of what is possible, of my responsibility. I will not take any new initiatives. Performers have rejected his proposal to maintain the current unemployment system until the start of 2004 while a settlement is negotiated. At the 57th Avignon festival, which usually draws more than 100,000 visitors, the board scheduled a meeting today to consider canceling the three-week event. In Paris workers responsible for loading and unloading the Stones stage, lighting and sound gear stopped work in sympathy with the strikers. The police were summoned to remove 50 to 100 protesters barring access by the trucks to the Stade de France. A spokeswoman for the French leg of the bands 40 Licks tour said, however, that volunteers and other personnel helped the equipment reach the stadium and asserted that the show would go ahead whatever. ART: A PAPER TRAIL -- The names are celebrated: Chagall, Degas, Ingres, Léger, Matisse, Picasso and Signac, to name a few. The time span is 150 years. The mediums are drawings, watercolors (like Signacs St.-Tropez: Evening Sun, left) and pastels. The exhibition, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is Classic to Modern: French Works on Paper, 1800-1950, From the Permanent Collection. In 150 years of political, social and cultural upheaval in France, artists interpreted and reinterpreted their world. The exhibition, from tomorrow through Sept. 7, explores these reactions in five thematic groups: The Body (Un)Wrapped, focused on the human form; Head and Shoulders, examining portraiture; Nature Denatured, about the world; Orientalism, reflecting the artists romance with the Orient; and Labor and Leisure, juxtaposing nostalgia for a rural society with images of Parisians savoring the wealth of the industrial age at resorts, the racetrack and cafes. IRAQS LOOTED ART -- The director of the Iraq Museum said yesterday that at least 10 percent of its contents had vanished. Speaking at a news conference at the British Museum in London, the director, Dr. Nawalaal Mutawalli, said some 13,000 objects had vanished from the museums storage room, which has been only partly inspected, the BBC reported. In addition, he said, 47 pieces, 7 of them described as very important masterpieces, had been taken from the exhibition room of the museum in Baghdad. The start of a thorough search of the museum was delayed until the staff could obtain a generator to provide electricity. The museums director of research, Donny George, said about 1,500 missing treasures had been returned, many by local people who said they were safeguarding them until troops could protect the museum. FILM: DELON RETROSPECTIVE -- In 75 films made in 50 years, he has gone from pretty boy to tough cop, contract killer, thief and ex-con. He is the French star Alain Delon (born 1935), left, a school dropout and Vietnam veteran who broke into movies in the role of a hit man in 1957 and achieved stardom in René Clements Plein Soleil (1960), an adaptation of Patricia Highsmiths Talented Mr. Ripley. In the years to follow, Mr. Delon starred in films like Rocco and His Brothers (1960) and The Leopard (1963) for Luchino Visconti, Eclipse (1962) for Michelangelo Antonioni, Le Samouraï (1967) and Dirty Money (1972) for Jean-Pierre Melville and Mr. Klein (1976) for Joseph Losey. Mr. Delon also became a writer, director and producer. From Friday through July 21 and from July 30 through Aug. 7 at the Walter Reade Theater, the Film Society of Lincoln center will revisit his career in a two-part 18-film retrospective, Man in the Shadows: The Films of Alain Delon. MUSIC IN THE PARK -- A new free summertime music series makes its debut at 7 tonight. HIGHLIGHTS JAPAN: PUBLISHER SENTENCED -- In a landmark case that raises questions about freedom of expression in Japan, a manga, or comic book, was held to be obscene, and its publisher was sentenced to a year in prison, the BBC reported yesterday. His sentence suspended for three years, the publisher, Monotori Kishi, 54, appealed immediately to the Tokyo High Court. He was found guilty of violating the penal code on the sale and distribution of obscene literature. The proceeding was the first in a trial court to accuse a comic book of obscenity. The presiding judge, Yujiro Nakatani, said the comic book, Misshitsu, or Honey Room, was too graphic in its depiction of lifelike bodies and genitalia, making the book pornographic. Reacting to the decision, Mr. Kishi said at a news conference, It is an infringement on freedom of expression and deals a great blow to the publishing industry. His lawyers had argued that the penal code provision, Article 175, under which he was convicted violates Article 21 of the Constitution, guaranteeing freedom of speech and press. Some 45 percent of all books and periodicals sold in Japan are manga, the BBC reported, adding that they often involve sexual material. Article 175 of the penal code does not clearly define obscenity, the BBC said, but precedent for the manga ruling was set in a 1957 case growing out of a Japanese translation of Lady Chatterlys Lover. Then the Supreme Court declared obscenity to be anything unnecessarily sexually stimulating that damages the normal sexual sense of shame of ordinary people or is against good sexual moral principles.. Arts Briefing column: Japanese comic book publisher Monotori Kishi reportedly is found guilty of violating penal code by distributing and selling obscene literature--comic book Misshitsu or Honey Room; one year sentence is suspended for three years; lawyers for Kishi, who has appealed decision, say code violates constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech and press; World Intellectual Property Organization, favoring estate of J R R Tolkien, rules that Alberta Hot Rods must surrender domain name www.jrrtolkien.com to company owning Tolkiens rights; photo (M)

Whats On Today
8 P.M. (HBO) GET HIM TO THE GREEK (2010) Russell Brand (above right, with Jonah Hill) reprises Aldous Snow, his snake-hipped British rocker from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, in Nicholas Stollers comedy about a record-label drone (Mr. Hill) dispatched to transport Snow -- a wreck after the failure of his latest album -- from London to the Greek, a famous concert hall in Los Angeles. Need we add that mayhem ensues? As played by the brilliantly unpredictable Mr. Brand, Snow is more than a pop-culture museum piece or a MacGruber-like bit of sketch comedy nonsense, A. O. Scott wrote in The New York Times. He has feelings, ideas and a dollop of talent to go with the uncontrolled appetites; even though hes narcissistic and self-destructive, he is also kind of fun to hang around with. As Aaron Green, Mr. Hill, wide-eyed and anxious as ever, makes a fine visual and temperamental foil for Mr. Brand, Mr. Scott said. The two of them are like the Trylon and Perisphere of comedy. The result, he said, is the bawdy-sweet mixture that is the signature of the Judd Apatow school of screen comedy. (Mr. Apatow was one of the producers of Get Him to the Greek.) Mr. Scott added: It is basically a ribald road picture, with not much of a plot beyond Aaron and Aldouss journey from London to Los Angeles via New York and Las Vegas, and not much for women to do that allows them to be funny in their own right. They are around to be ogled and exploited, and also sometimes to provide emotional sustenance, a duality that makes this movie both a hymn to, and a subversion of, the ideal of heterosexual monogamy. NOON (13) RICHARD HEFFNERS OPEN MIND Paul Nurse, the British geneticist and biologist who is a Nobel Prize winner in medicine, president emeritus of Rockefeller University, current president of the Royal Society and director of the United Kingdom Center for Medical Research and Innovation, continues his discussion of whether scientists have earned the trust of their paymasters: the public.
