Stunning Silviniaco Conti bags Bowl riches

Favourite for the Gold Cup after a scintillating performance in the King George, Silviniaco Conti again failed to shine at Cheltenham when seventh to Coneygree but back on a level surface, he proved hes right at the top of the staying-chase division.

Marfa, Gato del Sol: Similarities Abound

When Marfa drew post 18 for the Derby yesterday morning, it was the capstone to a series of uncannny similarities between him and Gato del Sol, who won last years Derby after breaking from post 18. Marfa and Gato del Sol are both gray colts. Both were bred in Kentucky but then sent to California, where they raced as 2-year-olds. Both made their final pre-Derby starts in the Santa Anita Derby and then the Blue Grass Stakes and both walked into stall 18 in the Derby gate with career records of 2 wins in 13 starts.

BIG RACE EXPECTED FROM RHOMAN RULE

In the future-book odds for the Kentucky Derby on May 4, set earlier this week by Mike Battaglia of Churchill Downs, Irish Sur is the third choice at 6 to 1 and Rhoman Rule is in a six-way tie for 15th at 30-1. But at Hialeah Park here Saturday, those two 3-year- old colts are likely to be co-favored in the Everglades Stakes, and the sharpies are touting Rhoman Rule. Irish Sur won the Tropical Park Derby and was beaten by only a neck in the Florida Derby by Proud Truth, the future-book favorite at 5-2. Rhoman Rule won an allowance race at Gulfstream Park the same day as the Florida Derby, and his winning time of 1:22 for seven furlongs translates to a far, far better race than the Florida Derby time of 1:50.

WOODWARD TOPS AN IMPORTANT SATURDAY

The most important day of racing so far this year comes Saturday, when Slew o Gold meets Fit to Fight in the Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park, Chiefs Crown runs in the Futurity Stakes there the same afternoon, and Carr de Naskra goes in the Pegasus Handicap at the Meadowlands that night. Last years Woodward, in which Slew o Gold beat Bates Motel by a neck, was deemed the fastest race of the year in New York by speed handicappers, and it set the stage for the rest of the season. It was the race that proved that Slew o Gold had developed into the best 3-year-old in the country and that Bates Motel could be beaten. This year, the race is just as pivotal.

First trained to peak at Aintree Carberry - RACING POST

NINA CARBERRY cannot wait for Saturday, when she will bid to become the first female rider to win the Crabbies Grand National on First Lieutenant, five days on from sister-in-law Katie Walsh landing the Irish Grand National.

With Winners Times Three, Triple Crown Settles Little

Animal Kingdom’s sixth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes probably points him to the Travers Stakes instead of the Arlington Million.. Joe Drape On Racing column notes the lack of a clear 3-year-old thoroughbred champion, after long shots win in each of three legs of horse racings Triple Crown.

Silviniaco Conti out for repeat victory in Bowl - Racing Post

SILVINIACO CONTI might not have won at Cheltenham but the highest rated staying chaser in Britain returns to a course where he does win at Aintree on Thursday.

HIGH PURSES FAIL TO ATTRACT QUALITY

The big races and big money are in place for a busy Labor Day racing weekend around the country, but the big horses are missing. Rarely has so much money been given away amid such mediocrity. The weakest fields are in the handicap division, where there is a huge dropoff in quality behind Slew o Gold and Fit to Fight, resting for their showdown in the Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park on Sept. 15. In their absence, the $500,000 Meadowlands Cup at Meadowlands Race Track and the $200,000 Del Mar Handicap at Del Mar, both on Monday, are up for grabs.

Bookmakers fear Fever as ten go for Melling Chase - Racing.

A Truly Thoroughbred Day for Belmont

The acts are all set for the three-ring spectacular at Belmont Park tomorrow, where more great horses will be in any one place for an afternoon except for the stallion barns at a few blue-chip breeding nurseries in Kentucky. Twelve 2-year-olds are entered in the Champagne Stakes, 11 older horses will run in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, and the latter group will be led to the post by Kelso and Forego. Those two great geldings, who won six Gold Cups and eight horse-of-the-year titles between them, will be on hand to encourage donations to the Thoroughbred Retirement Fund, a group dedicated to building or finding homes for retired runners. Horseplayers will be encouraged to toss a few dollars into collection bins around the track.

Mullins excited at the prospect of Arctic Fire - RACING POST

Irelands champion trainer will take his biggest ever team to Aintree, with Champagne Fever, who was denied a run at Cheltenham after being bitten by a stablemate in transit, Un De Sceaux, Nichols Canyon and Crabbies.

Outside Post Big Obstacle

With the announcement that his horse Toccet had drawn the 14 post for the $1 million Breeders Cup Juvenile, the trainer John Scanlan got up and left the room. He said he needed time to recover. Toccet, the winner of the Champagne at Belmont and the 6-1 co-third choice in the Juvenile morning line, was one of several horses who drew far outside posts in the two Breeders Cup 2-year-olds races, which will be run at a mile and an eighth this year for the first time.. Trainer John Scanlan and horse Toccet are at decided disadvantage for Breeders Cup, having drawn outside post, farthest from finish line (M)

All Yours on top as Hargam disappoints

ALL YOURS caused a major upset as the Fred Winter fifth took a huge step forward to land the first Grade 1 of his career. All eyes were on Champion jockey Tony McCoy and hot favourite Hargam but having travelled strongly on the outside of the field.

Australia Godolphin rider McDonald criticised by stewards.

RAY MURRIHY, chief steward at Racing NSW, has put James McDonald on notice over the jockeys selectiveness when it comes to accepting rides down in the weights.. Pfieffer has engaged Doncaster Mile-winning jockey Glen Boss to replace McDonald but Murrihy says the trainer should not have been in the position of having to find a rider after acceptance time on Wednesday. Therell be other riders but he wants you. He booked you a fortnight ago, Murrihy.

4 DERBY FAVORITES IN FLORIDA

The four early favorites for the May 4 Kentucky Derby are all running here Saturday at Gulfstream Park, and it is difficult to see how the races will do more than rearrange the order in which they dominate the division. Chiefs Crown should have a cakewalk in the $50,000 Swale Stakes at seven furlongs, and Proud Truth, Stephans Odyssey and Banner Bob tower over their eight rivals going nine furlongs in the $300,000 Florida Derby. Chiefs Crown, last years champion 2-year-old, was professional rather than brilliant in winning six of his nine starts as a juvenile, but his best races still look better than anything a 3-year-old has done this year. He will be making his debut as a 3-year-old in the Swale, and a speed- packed field of 11 seems likely to help his stretch-running style. Creme Fraiche, Cherokee Fast and Alfred look like the closest thing to competition. Chiefs Crown is running in the shorter race because a cough last month forced him to miss prep races for the Florida Derby.

Aintree planning to water after dry day

Aintree planning to water after dry day. By Jon Lees 6:22PM 9 APR 2015. AINTREE clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch on Thursday night announced selective watering of all three courses after a warm, dry start to the Crabbies Grand National meeting.

GLOOM CONTINUES AT HIALEAH

After 50 afternoons of racing at Gulfstream Park without a drop of rain smudging the track, it began to pour an hour before post time for the opening of Hialeah Park today. That shower of hard luck, which probably kept many customers at home, seemed to reflect this tracks relatively hard times. Gulfstream, which does consistently better business in the booming suburbs here, runs the more desirable January-February meeting, offering richer purses and a higher class of racing. The first four races on the Hialeah card today were enough to discourage anyone, filled with bottom-rung claiming horses with prices of $10,000 and down on their heads.

Derby Pick Gets Post 16 in Field of 20

A full field of 20 horses was entered today in the 126th Kentucky Derby on Saturday, with Fusaichi Pegasus starting from the 16th stall in the outside auxiliary gate and ranked as the 9-5 favorite. It should keep him out of trouble, said Neil Drysdale, who trains the star for the Japanese venture capitalist Fusai Sekiguchi. The other spots give you a long time to stand in the gate. So, why wait?

Jezki and McCoy make most of Arctic tumble

FORMER Champion Hurdle winner Jezki won the seventh Grade 1 of his career but the victory was marred by the final-hurdle fall of Cheltenham runner-up Arctic Fire, who was still travelling strongly upsides the eventual winner when crashing to the ground.

Relentless Spieth set to claim home-state glory

JORDAN SPIETH said he signed up for the Houston Open to trim off the fat before the Masters, but the 21-year-old American superstar has produced some lean and mean golf to top the leaderboard after three rounds. Spieth saw this event as a chance to .

CLASSIC SHOWDOWN ON TURF

Tomorrow, for the first time, three races worth $500,000 or more will be run on the same day: the $625,250 Turf Classic for older horses on the grass at Belmont Park, the $577,625 Arlington-Washington Futurity for 2-year-olds at Arlington Park near Chicago and the $500,000 Super Derby for 3-year-olds at Louisiana Downs near New Orleans. All three are Grade I races, but only the Turf Classic is attracting the best of its division. It features the long-awaited showdown between John Henry, the 9-year-old gelding who was the horse of the year in 1981 and is racings richest horse ever with earnings of more than $5.4 million, and All Along, the 5-year-old French mare who was the horse of the year in 1983. John Henry, who won the Arlington Million in his last start, is even- money on the morning line and will break from post four under Chris McCarron. All Along, making her first start since last November, is listed at 8 to 5 and will break from the rail with Wally Swinburn, the Irish jockey who rode her last year and also rode Shergar and Golden Fleece in Europe.

Six things every Aintree first timer needs to know - RACING POST

Gleneagles and Elm Park added to the Derby field

Elm Park is the only horse to disrupt OBriens dominance of the ante-post market, while Criquette Head-Maareks Epicuris fares best of the rest and he too has been added at the latest stage. The French challenge is supplemented by Andre Fabres Grey.

Twiston Davies Rocky well placed to land Grand National.

Speaking to Betfred TV, Twiston-Davies added: Hes 10lbs better off at the weights having won last time after the weights were out so were in a lovely position and we think hes going there with an excellent chance..

Liverpool honours a racing great in style

LEGENDARY jockey Tony McCoy was honoured on the eve of the Crabbies Grand National meeting by one of Liverpools most iconic landmarks when the citys Royal Liver Building was lit up with a good luck message for the soon-to-be retired great.

Un De Sceaux to miss Saturday date

At Sales, Prices Soar but Spirits Drop

The same old sales crowd seems up to its usual pace this week, spending hundreds of thousands on yearlings and tossing back gin-and-tonics while swapping royal gossip outside the bars and paddocks at the Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sales. Something is different, though, in a lack of the giddy excitement that has buoyed the sales world for several years. In its place is a reticence, a dullness of spirit that many owners, breeders and horsemen here have noticed. They suggest it traces back to what happened in Lexington, Ky., on July 19. That was the night at the Keeneland sales when Sheik Mohammed ibn Rashid al Maktoum of Dubai outbid Robert Sangster and purchased a yearling colt by Northern Dancer for $10.2 million. It was not just a record but a staggering leap. The previous record price, set last year, was $4.2 million; only three years ago, no yearling had sold for more than $2 million.

Post 12 Is Not Perfect or Pleasant

When Pleasantly Perfect drew the No. 12 post Wednesday for the $4 million Breeders Cup Classic at Lone Star Park, Richard Mandella did not complain or profess to be worried. The 12 hole in a 13-horse field does not mean certain defeat on Saturday, but it does make it very likely that Pleasantly Perfect will race wide on the first turn, losing ground to the horses who hug the rail. It seemed to be the latest setback for Mandella, a trainer who has had a trying year. But it will take a lot more than a poor draw to make Mandella lose faith in a horse who has been the only constant in his stable this year.

Granny Dumping by the Thousands

It was a sad and troubling story. John Kingery, 82, suffering from Alzheimers disease and wearing a sweatshirt inscribed Proud To Be An American, was abandoned outside the mens room at a dog racing track in Post Falls, Idaho. His wheelchair had been stripped of identification and his clothing labels ripped out; he couldnt remember his own name. Pictures of him clutching his teddy bear as attendants prepared to send him home to Oregon provoked a national wince. But what turns a wince into an ache is the sudden awareness that John Kingery is no isolated case. The American College of Emergency Physicians estimates that 70,000 elderly Americans were abandoned last year by family members unable or unwilling to care for them or pay for their care.

DREAM RACE IS STILL A DREAM

A giddy announcement Wednesday by Belmont Park officials that All Along was returning to the United States to run against John Henry in the Turf Classic on Sept. 22 was as puzzling as it was exciting, and it turns out to have been a bit premature. The French mare, North Americas horse of the year in 1983, has yet to race this year and will not run in the Turf Classic unless she wows her handlers when she makes her seasonal debut at Longchamps in Paris on Sunday. A showdown between All Along and John Henry would be an unprecedented battle between former horse- of-the-year titleholders and racings ultimate battle of the sexes. The 5-year-old mare, who won the title after she was flown here last fall and won the Turf Classic, the Rothmans International and the Washington D.C. International, set a single-season earnings record of $2.3 million and gained a reputation as one of the best grass horses in history.

Doyle to ride Belardo in Greenham comeback

He was steered to victory at Newmarket last October by Andrea Atzeni, but has since signed for Qatar Racing. Varian said : James came and sat on Belardo the other day and will ride him at Newbury. Godolphins other retained rider William Buick is set.

7 Colts Ready to Weather the Travers

As an unrelenting downpour soaked Saratoga this morning, seven trainers entered their colts for the 114th Travers Stakes, which will be run Saturday. The trainers of the three favorites had no reason to fear the rain or the possibility of an off track on Saturday. Bill Bonifaces Deputed Testamony won the Preakness on a sloppy track; Sid Watterss Slew o Gold had just worked a flashy half-mile in 47 1/5 in the Saratoga slop, and Harvey Vaniers Play Fellow won the Blue Grass Stakes on a sloppy track. For the Travers, Slew o Gold drew the rail, Deputed Testamony got post four, and Play Fellow will start from post six. Their opponents, from the rail out, are Head of the House, Exile King, Hyperborean and Timeless Native.
